Oh...man. The opening few minutes of this film gave me a backache, I was so tense.
And I don't know how any other audiences reacted, but the one I saw it with burst into applause several times.
We paid full price (because all the matinees were sold out) and did not feel cheated.

Grrr. Thanks for rubbing it in.
We had full coverage for both kids Thursday night (midnight showing) and then my wife got strep and was bedridden. All weekend the kids have been home with no hope of locating a sitter.

I liked it quite a bit more than I did The Prisoner of Azkaban.
Still, the visual disconnect between the first two films and the later ones grew even more in this one. It's going to be really jarring for future audiences to watch these in sequence because of the way Hogwarts is changing.
Also, and this isn't a problem so much with the film as with the entire series after The Chamber of Secrets, I can understand that a lot of material had to be chopped out in order to make this a single film, but some scenes came across as being rushed. Like The Fellowship of the Ring, there were instances where a scene in the book was expanded on while others that were much more crucial to the plot were trimmed or excised altogther, but Peter Jackson corrected this in the Special Edition. As such, certain things in The Order of the Phoenix are going to be explained by flashback or add them to the plot of the film, which will likely come at the cost of something else.
The only other option is not to explain them at all, but to rely on people who have read the books to explain things to people who haven't. That's the greatest problem with the revolving door system for directors; their concern is focused on their individual film and not the series as a whole. As such, omissions by one director are either going to have to be retconned by their successors or continued to avoid confusion, which will cause an even further deviation from the books. In some cases, that's going to lead to a film series that just doesn't make sense.
It's one thing to omit a minor reference to a rooster or a minor subplot here and there, but it's something else entirely to omit one of the most important scenes in the book, which had a large effect on the course of the series from then on.
On the plus side, the casting is excellent as always. Alan Rickman especially makes the most of the little time he has and the younger cast continues to grow into their roles. Daniel Radcliffe might as well get used to being called Harry Potter for the rest of his life.
The film looks great, especially the first part of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Newell also managed to inject some nice bits of humor into the film.
BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence. |

I was going to pass on this one, since I found the first two Potter movies overrated and the third one quite disapointing, but I keep on hearing good buzz around this fourth instalment. Who knows.
I wouldn't worry much about differences between the different Potter movies, as the filmmakers themselves don't seem to care much about them in the first place. After all, they have to change something from film to film, otherwise the audience would feel cheated. "Hey, didn't we see exactly this quidditch game last year?" |

Just got back from it (rare case of both kids passing out after lunch and grandmama over for a visit) and was a bit dissapointed too. I see what Ubiq meant about important scenes.
It wasn't that important scenes were left out of the film were important to this film, but they were critical to the next two. I have no idea how they will cover that up. If I remember corrctly, though, this is the last film under the original contract, so it is possible it will be the last (certainly unlikely they will get back the whole cast).
