I guess you can't technically call it a spin-off from Smallville, as it's a different Arthur Curry, although still with the ecological savior angle.

Yet it's not being called Aquaman, Aquaman (sorry, Arthur Curry) won't be talking to fish, he won't be an Atlantean... it it doesn't walk like a duck, sound like a duck, or smell like a duck, is it still a duck?

Although this did get a laugh from me...

As for plots, "The stories will come from the environment: ocean polluters, evil oil companies and other (threats to the) environment," Gough said.

This is even less original than you'd think, as Namor (Aquaman's Marvel counterpart) is always rallying against threats to the environment. What's next, his love interest being the wife of Mister Terrific?

That's always been the biggest strike against Aqua-Man for me in that the only way to make him "cool" (well, as cool as Aqua-Man could possibly be) is to rip off his Marvel equivalent.

Aqua-Man is lame, but Namorian Aqua-Man is even worse.

The probems is (and to disagree with Ubiq) is that the only way to make Aquaman cool is to take him out of the water. It's the reason why pretty much all aquatic comic book characters aren't worth the time it takes to read them - everything they do has to be linked back to water and at the end of the day, swimming around a lot isn't particularly villainous / heroic.

Might as well call it a remake of "Man From Atlantis".

It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation.

I'm pretty sure Namor was introduced <I>before</i> Aquaman. Which means the poor bastard really has no redeaming features at all.

Namor seems to have been created in 1939, but didn't reach wide publication until 1940...Aquaman first appeared in November 1941.

ISTR that the 'real' Aquaman got Namorized in the mid- to
late 90's, and this was the version that was portrayed on
the JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon serioes on Cartoon Network.

MikeC,loved the old Filmation show when he was a lad...

A history of Aquaman:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquaman

A history of Namor:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub-Mariner

Namor beat Aquaman to print by about 2 years. However, from the looks of things, Aquaman has been in print more often and has a less interesting history (although a much, much harsher one) than Namor.
