Wow, anyone see the trailer? Just watched it from the downloadable trailer on XBox Marketplace.

Haven't seen it yet, but that film has everything against it, from the decreasing popularity of Tom Cruise and the fact he has full control over the film (as with Part II, which was also a disaster, although it did well enough in terms of money) to the constant rewrites, changes of writers / directors to the escalating budget.

It better be a kick ass film, otherwise Tom Cuise career could jump the shark soon. And before you tell me that's not possible, let me say two words: Harrison Ford. And he can act much better than Cruise.

I don't think Tom Cruise has so much jumped the shark, as he's jumped the couch. But yeah I don't anybody is buying him as the action hero anymore.

What do you think is the primary reason for the drop in Cruise's popularity? Other than, ya know, he's over 40 now and the Tiger Beat generation that once flocked to his movies has long since moved on to greener pastures.

Not to mention the fact that he's a complete idiot and never hesitates to show it.

Once he fired super-publicist Pat Kingsley it all went downhill. The scientology talk, the I! Love! This! Woman! Seehowheterosexual I am side show with Katie all of it. His sister is handling his publicity now and you can see how that's working. Also magazines and shows for the first time are running (or were after the infamous Oprah appearance) articles about his erratic behavior. Where before they wouldn't dare because Kingsley had the barganing chip of witholding her A-list client roster from them if they did. Career wise, he just can't play Maverick anymore. And outside of a few recent roles, Magnolia, War of the Worlds the majority of his work could be summed up as Maverick goes to _. Like MI3 is Maverick Goes To Italy and Blows Things Up.

Funny thing is, Tom Cruise has done better in recent years when playing jerks... or villains. His best role in a long time is still that of Vincent in Collateral. But then he goes back to the old flash-that-boyish-grin schtick.

Two words, Tommy-boy: Grow Up.

That's it. When he actually shows flaws beneath the surface he's good but he is way to long in tooth for the dashing romeo image.

Scientology's million year slaves toil planting wildflowers through the night for Tom and Nicole to frolic through!!

And there's a lot more where that came from in this must read article:

His best work was Minority Report for which he got little or no credit, because by then the Cruise backlash was already underway (the Kidman divorce and all).

BTW, anybody here wonder whether Cinderella Man's nosedive is indicative of a Russell Crowe backlash? Answer me quick, or I'll throw a cellphone at your face.

Yes, but watch the trailer. The opening minute is a badly acted torture scene in which the villain says about as menacingly as Michael Caine (in Hannah and Her Sisters) how he's going to find Tom's boyfri--er, girlfriend, hunt her down, and kill her in front of him... followed by a bunch of unconvincing CGI stunts, and some idiotic dialogue.

When a trailer is stupid AND boring with the Mission Impossible theme, the movie is a certain flop.

Maybe, or it could be that the studio released a film that would clearly have done well in the fall/winter in the summer. Seeing as Crowe just scored himself a SAG nomination, it seems as if Hollywood at least isn't giving up on him. Good thing too, since, for all his off-screen boorishness, the man remains an excellent actor.

Considering Mel Gibson (whom I despise) and Woody Allen (whom I love) keep getting nominations after their various actions, Hollywood is very cognizant of talent.

Uh, Jonah... Hollywood has essentially blacklisted Mel Gibson and the only films he can get made now are through his own production company, Icon.

And I don't recall Passion of the Christ netting Gibson any Oscar nominations, do you?
