Quick - how many people can quote from Cuckoo's Nest (I don't count - I saw it 4 times in the theatre in original release).
Now, how many people can quote from Jaws? Make sure to include those who weren't alive when it first came out.
Cuckoo's Nest was a brilliant film, and certainly more deserving of an Oscar than most that did win. However, it's not been remembered and treasured by the general public like Jaws.
WHich brings back the question, what exactly should the Academy be trying to reward? A film that pleases the general population? One that appeals to the artistic sensibilities of the professionals in the industry? Or some sort of balance between the two. (I don't claim to know the answer here - I'm just interested in what people here think would be a good approach.) |

Oh, I can remember many indelible scenes from One Flew -- the suffocation death of McMurphy followed by Chief Bromden escaping using the water fountain, the evil Mrs. Rachet, the World Series baseball game scene, McMurphy coming out from electroshock.
Are you trying to say that a truly great movie has a lot of catchphrases?
Citizen Kane had just one.
By the way, I've seen more One Flew references than Jaws references in The Simpsons. |

| That's why I think that instead of these (sometimes) meaningless and (often) flawed annual award shows, the Academy should do what the sports Halls of Fame do - a film/performance/whatever has to sit for a few years before it even becomes eligible, which allows time for people to better judge just how good a film/performance/whatever it really was. That way the Academy could avoid having a "tossup" between two truly excellent and Oscar-worthy films in one year. |

Didn't mean to unintentionally diss one of your favorite movies, Jonah - particularly since I used it as an example, at least in my own mind, of "there were giants in those days!" Imagine, having to pick your Oscar vote between those two.
However, if you asked, say, 100 people on the street, I would make a reasonable wager more of them would have a much clearer memory of Jaws than Cuckoo's Nest. If you asked them about Jack Nicholson, probably more would remember The Shining or Batman, even though I would consider both of those inferior movies. |

Field of Dreams was not a Indie about a rapping pimp. It also got the DGA, PGA and WGA, unlike Hustle and Flow. It's the kind of movie that doesn't always get acting or directing nominations. Indies usually do. Indies without writing or directing support have no chance at the Oscar. |

The problem is AMPAS is about what they liked this year not what they think will liked from this year in a hundred years. Also it is very difficult to accurately predict what will be liked about 2005 in, say 2015. |

It'll never happen, Dirk, but you've got a good point. You'll know what movies will be around twenty years from now... twenty years from now. If we had a sort of "belated Oscars", does anyone doubt that Citizen Kane, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Goodfellas would win for their years? |
