| The film RE-ANIMATOR (1985) is based on H.P. Lovecraft's short story "Herbert West-Re-Animator," and contains a lot of gratuitous nudity and perversion. Any H.P. Lovecraft fan who is familiar with the original story will notice numerous changes between the source and the screenplay. Early in the film, there is an establishing shot of a big, modern building, which is identified as Miskatonic University Medical School, Arkham, Massacusetts. Now, is there any H.P. Lovecraft fan out there who does not agree with me that Arkham, Massacusetts, and all the buildings on the Miskatonic campus are OLD? |

Yes, well, you have to remember that it's America. That's the place where "the oldest house in the city" may be from 1900. Wow.
But the movie is bl**dy brilliant. And brilliantly bl**dy as well.

Not in H.P. Lovecraft. "Pickman's Model" is set in the basement of a house that was standing in Cotton Mather's time. |

Remember, though, that Lovecraft was writing in the 1920s and 1930s, and in his stories many of the American buildings/graveyards where things took place were rather old. That would date them to the early 1800s, whereas today if you wrote about a 100 year old house it would have been built in 1905. As for Miskatonic U, I would guess it was founded in the mid to late 1800s, but I have no evidence to back that up.
I myself liked "Re-Animator" okay, but preferred "From Beyond" (same director, released about the same time). The severed head zombie was a bit over the top for me.

Yes. Fine. I agree. And there are plenty of buildings around the United States, hospitals, schools, academic buildings on college campuses, that look 1880sish, that could Miskatonic University Medical School. The building they used in the film was TOO MODERN. |

Hey, Hinda:
Not too sure why this is bothering you. The movie barely resembles Lovecraft's story (and after reading it all I can say is I heartily approve of the changes). Since it was updated to modern times I'm not sure why the building would be considered in context too modern.
KarlAllen: I loved 'From Beyond', too. The funny thing is, the reanimated head in 'Re-Animator' was from the short story (complete w/head in the bag and mannequin head on top of the reanimated body). I don't recall him trying to fool around with a terrified naked chick, though.

| I guess "Re-animator" is alright, but everytime I see it I can't guess where the fun is, except Jeffrey Combs, who is great. I prefer the "serious" Lovecraft adaptations Gordon filmed later, like "Castle Freak" and "Dagon". |

Yes, definitely "Dagon". Also, Miskatonic University is said to have been founded in 1690 and moved to it's present location in 1770.

Because part of the Lovecraft atmosphere is the spooky old houses and the spooky old hotels and the spooky old forests and the spooky old farms. |

Well, as far as the buildings looking too modern:
On a lot of campuses, old buildings are cheek by jowl with new buildings. The riot of architectural styles at my alma mater, Rutgers University, is nothing short of mind-numbing (in a Lovecraftian, non-euclidian way).
Though I see your point (and it's something that no Lovecraft movie, no matter how good, has gotten completely correctly, except possibly for the old AIP HAUNTED PALACE), having old Miskatonic's Med School located in an ultramodern building did nothing to ruin the atmosphere for me.
To each their own, I say.
