I doubt anyone here has good feelings about the comming Debauchery of remakes, The Pink Panther.
So....anyone feel like a bit of wrist slashing?

And : Has a trailer made you feel like ending it all, as much or more, then this one? Figuritivlu speaking, of corse...

The only glimmer of hope for me was that Steve Martin's name was in the writing credits; after all Steve Martin is a good writer.

But after seeing the trailer, I ran for cover.

I've got just two words for this film: SGT. BILKO

I thought the "public service" ad Martin did as Insp. Clouseau was worse than the Panther trailers I've seen (I guess what I'm trying to say is that the trailers may not even show just how bad this flick will be!!!).

At least I just picked up the Original PINK PANTHER for under $10 on DVD this week!

Of course the trailers really tell you nothing, but from what I have seen I'm hearing a distinct "This script was written by someone who saw the films only when they were originally released and is under the impression that the most memorable bits were the whole film."

Steve Martin is going out of his way to defend the film: http://movies.msn.com/movies/hitlist/2-3-06_2

Is it just me or are Steve Martin and Jean Reno two of the oddest co-stars in recent memory?

Asked if he'd like to play Clouseau forever, the 61-year-old actor chuckles and says, "Well, with hip replacements I could."

But, then with a touch of excitement that was missing last fall, he says, "I have often fantasized of this just being my career."

Bad idea!

Remember what happenend to Sellars when he started playing Clouseau over and over again.

Am I the only one who feels that Martin looks more like Hitler than Sellars with that moustache?

Maybe he should have made a remake of The Great Dictator instead.

I'd like to see Rowan Atkinson as Inspector Clouseau. I think he could pull it off.

The character he played in the underrated Johnny English was very Closeau-esque.

No, Atkinson is too self-satisfiedly smug to be Clouseau.

I'm really torn on this one:

Both Steve Martin & Jean Reno are excellent
actors (and Reno I think will show himself
to be an excellent comedian), and I have a
great deal of respect for Martin's artistic
integrity (even forgiving SGT. BILKO; even
he has to eat without having to sell his
art collection). He helped with the screenplay,
too, which is another plus.

Unfortunately, its a remake, and therefore
has at its core a strong nugget of PURE
EVIL! And, to judge from the trailer, Martin
is just not able to project the effortless
bumbling that Sellers nailed. It really looks
like he's playing Clouseau, whereas Sellers
ably projected that he WAS Clouseau. I
mean, the clip in the commercial with the
dialect coach is just painful. The accent
for Clouseau, while a funny gag, was never
really that indecipherable, and was never
truly central to the core of the character
(which is to say, his triumphing not over
his own incompetance, but because of it).

Combine that with the fact that the director
is pretty much a hack, and the non-involvement
of Blake Edwards, and this one makes me feel a
bit ooky.

MikeC, I think Kline & Martin should have switched roles.

I saw the trailer and literally could not believe my eyes/ears. If there is one honestly funny moment in this child-molester of a remake I will eat this keyboard. What's French for "rock bottom?"

Apparently Martin is the only reason the film got made; basically, the remake was his idea.

I'd personally rather see Geoffrey Rush in the role. He recently played Peter Sellers in a film biography. Given that he's a fine actor and not adverse to doing "light" material (ex., Pirates of the Caribbean), I think he would have made a splendid Clouseau.

P.S. The most IMDB could bluster was (paraphrasing) "at least Martin made a better Clouseau than Alan Arkin and Roberto Benigni":

Oh, yeah, that's a compliment.
