Word on the street is a Smallville-type show about Aquaman is in the works.

It'll take place during his early years: working at the local aquatic pet store; protesting the fish section at the market; getting wedgies every day in school, on the street, at home, etc.

You know, I did some reasearch on Aquaman at one point, and I think a great dramatic, action story could be made from it, perhaps with Karl Urban in the role. But comedy could work, too.

I can't wait for the episode where Aquaman has to choose between his responsibilities as captain of the swim team or saving dolphins from the nets of EEE-vil tuna fishermen.

Well, Smallville started lousy (basically I felt it was a bad rip off of the Buffy formula), really improved for the 2nd and 3rd season or so, and then started to fall apart again. My point though is that it was freaking Superman. No matter how bad it could have started, its real hard to kill a legendary character. Hell, even Superman IV and the Batman movies 3 and on couldn't kill Superman and Batman.
But Aquaman? Seriously, what the heck? They would've been better off going with Green Arrow, and having Aquaman as a main supporting character (as he was in the brilliant Kevin Smith reboot of Arrow). Plus G.A. is extremely witty and the SFX budget for an athlete who is a great trick shot (the newest version avoids the goofy arrows) is a lot cheaper than a merman who controls sealife.
Besides, didn't they remember Birds of Prey? They did a Batman spinoff series, stocked it with tons of T&A, from what I read stayed true to the comics, and it tanked so bad and so fast the cast was still doing junkets talking about how great the show was doing after it was yanked in most markets! If Bat-Hoo-Hoo's couldn't survive, I dunno how Aquaman could.
Now, if they go with the Aquaman from when DC tried to get hard core like Marvel (they Extreme-d their cast - Batman got his back broke, Wonder Woman became a pyscho, and Aquaman had his city decimated, lost his wife and kid, and his hand!), that will tank so hard and fast the resulting black hole might accidentally wipe out the cast of Smallville.
And I've only seen fragments of one or two episodes of Birds of Prey. At the time, Buffy/Angel took up all my viewing time.

I want to see a YOUNG BRUCE WAYNE show, where Bruce travels the world talking to the experts in every crime-investigation-related field imaginable, making himself into the Batman through dedication and psychotic devotion to the memory of his parents.
Instead we get Aquaman. Freakin' AQUAMAN. |
