Did you hear that ballroom dancing is all the rage? Well, that's what the media keeps insisting. Of course, most of the media that keeps insisting this to be the case is on ABC, not so coincidentally the same network that airs Dancing With The Stars. Whether or not ballroom dancing really is the current dance fad of the moment, the important thing is that Hollywood has taken the bait. Along comes TAKE THE LEAD starring Antonio Banderas as a former professional dancer that volunteers to teach dance to rowdy teens in the New York public school system. Naturally, there's a clash of cultures at first but eventually... You know the drill? The end result is built around the students in a competition where they unveil some new hybrid of hip-hop and ballroom that's sure to take the dance world by storm. Woohoo!

TAKE THE LEAD was "Inspired by" a true story. Not "Based on" but "Inspired by," which is modern entertainment industry code language for, "This movie is based on a true story but our crack marketing research department deemed the true story as it is wasn't quite cinematic enough so we've rewritten the majority of the tale because we know what kind of film you're willing to pay to see and the inspiring tale, while worthy of making a movie about, needed improvement in order to appeal to a broader demographic." While there really was a dance instructor who inspired some inner-city kids by teaching them interpretive dance, TAKE THE LIBERTIES... I mean TAKE THE LEAD looks to have been constructed with a book of Mad Libs as the trailer alone looks like it pulls out every cliche in the book for this type of film. It really is DANGEROUS MINDS meets LAMBADA.

A part of me feels I should unleash heaping amounts of scorn upon this film but I cannot watch the trailer without chuckling greatly. I honestly think I'm probably going to end up going to see this one just for a laugh. Seriously, you have to see this trailer to see it. TAKE THE LEAD dances its way into theaters (and our hearts!) on April 7th; just a few weeks from now and yet there still isn't even a poster available for me to copy and paste to go along with this. I haven't stressed enough how much you have to see this trailer.

Here's the trailer link and I assure you it will be good for a laugh: http://www.apple.com/trailers/newline/takethelead/

Almost makes me feel sorry for Banderas. He looks like a nice, hard working person, but he should be realising by now that about 95% of the acting jobs he's taking in Hollywood suck big time. I mean, and I mean it seriously, that the horse in both Zorro movies was outacting him in most scenes. Does Banderas stuck some chili in his rectum before the director shouts "action"?
