I might be interested in reading about Last Action Hero.
The book definately answers why a studio would march down a road to folly.
Does the book take about the fallout after these films are made?

Looks like a number of these films (Ishtar, Town & Country, Kevin Costner) failed because of falling star power. "Last Action Hero," for example, came at the end of a huge number of successes for Ahnuld. (I think his previous film was Terminator 2 which sold a ton of tickets.)
So one can see where spending more money on an Ahnuld picture would be seen as risk-free, since the film itself would (in theory) be a big success. Pity it takes more than money to make a good film. |
