Bay revives "Friday" for New Line

By Borys Kit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Jason is coming back.

Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes are gearing up to remake "Friday the 13th" for New Line Cinema, from a script by Mark Wheaton.

The "Friday the 13th" series began in 1980, with Sean S. Cunningham directing the first feature, released by Paramount Pictures. After eight films the slasher series, featuring the masked killer Jason Voorhees, moved to New Line, which revived the franchise with "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" in 1993.

New Line's most recent installment, "Freddy vs. Jason," in which Voorhees faced off against Freddy Krueger from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, was released in 2003, grossing more than $82 million domestically.

Insiders said the producers were hoping to release the movie on Friday, October 13, but it is unlikely that all the pieces will fall into place to make that a reality. No director is attached to the project, and no actors have been cast.

Platinum Dunes produced 2003's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake, which grossed more than $80 million. The company recently wrapped production on the prequel starring Jordana Brewster. The movie will be released October 6.

Well at least they'll be getting back to the Camp Crystal Lake roots. It seems pointless to do a remake though, why not just do another sequel? I'm sure it would make good money.

Sure seems like a sequel would be a better idea. After all, wouldn't we eventually want to get to "Friday the 13th: Part XIII"?

Suppose the remake is a huge hit. What will they call the sequel to that one?

Is it a remake? I thought it was another sequel.

And Mark Wheaton is kindofa sortofa friend...well, let's say "internet associate"...of mine (he used to be known as "Smilin' Jack Ruby" on various film sites like Chud) so I'm obligated to support this.

In spirit.

Which does not involve any heavy lifting.

I'm expecting, any day now, a live action, full length remake of "Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse." And why? Does any one out there know how many splendid books and short stories have never been filmed?

Whether or not it's a sequel or a remake is kind of academic seeing as the movies are all basically virtually indistinguishable plotless sequences of a guy in a hockey mask killing people (Except for the first one if you want to be pedantic) and the continuity of the films is tenuous at best.

They probably decided to go with a remake after sending the whole franchise into space in Jason X. I mean, what are you going to do after that? Follow the Leprechaun into the 'hood?

It isn't a remake. It is something of a reboot that will feature a timeline of Jason's history without mentioning stuff like his trips to Manhattan, Hell, and outer space, nor his smackdown with Freddy Krueger.

I've suggested calling it JASON EPISODE ONE: THE PHANTOM MACHETE
