Alas, they include some damned good ones: All the Gamera & Godzilla movies, Fugitive Alien (both), Time of the Apes, Mighty Jack and several others.
Apparently the Sandy Frank folks were not amused by MST's treatment of them. I don't suppose the "Sandy Frank Song" helped, either.
Still, this is quite a hit for those of us trying to keep MST alive for recent and future fans. Had I the money, I'd buy Sandy Frank out just to release the rights for those MST episodes...

And one more thing... if you happen upon the following, grab them, for they are collectibles:
AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN (VHS, Rhino) VHS pulled from shelves due to rights issues before Rhino's MST releases went to DVD format. Reissue not likely.
BEGINNING OF THE END (DVD, Rhino) Pulled from shelves due to rights issues. Reissue not likely.
MST3K: THE MOVIE (DVD, MCA/Universal) First went out of print; currently rumored to be tied up with rights issues. Reissue not likely.

I'm going to have to inventory my VHS tapes from the trading days. I know I have at least one of the Fugitive Aliens and I didn't think I had anything special there. I have long considered converting some of my old stuff to DVD before it disintegrates and I'll have to add that to the mental list.

The rights issues. What are the owners thinking? Is it an ego thing? It must be, as why else would the Sandy Frank catalog be so tightassed?

If my MST lore is accurate, the show's ratings fell significantly in its last couple years on Comedy Central, due to a combination of constantly juggling time slots and an abject disregard for the show's fans. It's ratings on the Sci-Fi Channel were good throughout its entire run, but though the cast and crew weren't sick of doing the show per se, they decided ten years was enough - it was best to quit while they were ahead and move on to other projects (presumably so they wouldn't one day get sick of it and ruin it).
Actually, the cancellation by SFC came as a big surpise to the Brains; Kevin Murphy was quoted (and this is second hand) just sitting around for a while, metaphorically dry clicking his revolver after getting the news. This was right around the time SFC dropped FARSCAPE and other properties that they had minimal financial stake in (BSG & the Stargate shows all originate, as I recall, from studios owned by SFC's parent company).
Though, in hindsight, it is best that they went out pretty much at the top of their game.
I used to post frequently to alt.tv.mst3k and its Usenet descendents, and MST3K really spawned my love of bad movies like nothing else. It is a subject near & dear to my heart.
My faves:
Overall fave: CATALINA CAPER
Favorite Joels: GODZILLA VS MEGALON GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER Any GAMERA film. The various old time shorts they did in the earlier seasons.
Favorite Mikes: SANTO VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN PRINCE OF SPACE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett did a couple of movie critique spots for NPR as "The Film Crew", which you can hear at these links:

I admit to a soft spot for The Dead Talk Back. A hilarious movie, and a hilarious short before it ("The Selling Wizard", a sales film for commercial freezers).

I just realized I left "The Final Sacrifice" off my list. Any movie that names it's "hero" Zap Rowsdower is okay in my book.

I could be in the minority here, but I was glad to see Joel dumped in favor of Mike. The early Joel episodes were unbeatable but as the show kept on going, he seemed to get bored with the whole concept. At the end he seemed to be morphing into a really bad lounge singer.

Top five: 1. Space Mutiny. "It's nice they gave the dead girl another chance." 2. Red Zone Cuba "Drink Night Train, go to the basketball game, throw up under the bleachers." 3. Robot Monster. "The cyclotronic vibrations will smash the planet earth out of the universe." 4. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. "Mom, my nuts." 5. Teenagers from Outer Space: "TORCHA!"

A followup question shouldbe: what's your favorite MST3K episode that's still available on VHS or DVD?
Because you guys are killing me with these, "Oh, such-and-such was a great episode, too bad it's not available on video anymore" posts. |
