Okay, since the Oscars are coming up this Sunday, it's time for us Jabootu-ites to weigh in on the matter! Because we ARE capable of deciding what good films are... HOW TO PLAY: For each category I show here (the ones we here might actually care about), pick one movie/performance that you think SHOULD win and one that you think WILL win.
When it gets to be Oscar Day, if there is still interest in this thread, I'll tally up our choices and find out who we picked to be the deserving winners and the actual winners.

Does anyone have a link describing, or is willing to describe, the masterwork that is Good Night and Good Luck?
I saw it in the theater and thought it was a pointless exercise in nostalgia, with no direction and an uncompelling story. For all the hype the movies builds about McCarthy and his terrible wrath, all he did was go on the air and question Murrow's motivation in attacking him.

IMHO I think Brokeback Mountain will sweep the Oscars. If that movie wins, I won't be visiting Hollywood anytime soon. A catigory 7 will wipe it off the map. Mr Robertson said so.
It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation. |

I agree with Freschel, Brokeback will win everything it has been nominated for. Whether it should or not, I can't say, since I haven't seen any of the "major" (ie, non technical achievement) films, (except Crash, which I thought was pretty good).
As for the Oscards themselves, I can only quote the Cyberleader: "These things are IRRELEVANT!" |

| I gotta go with Flange on this one, at least for this year. Crash is up for Picture, and Cinderella Man and King Kong are not. And Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger aren't even up for Actor and Actress? I'm planning to watch a movie Sunday night. |

| Hoffman SHOULD be a lock on Best Actor. He was amazing. If "Brokeback" loses in anything, it'll be this category. |

One thing remarkable about this year is how the Academy resisted the temptation to throw in a popular movie for nomination. As BradH812 mentioned: no King Kong. Also no Batman Begins or Chronicles of Narnia. They played strictly to the arthouse crowd this year. For point of comparison, see the nominees for this year's Independent Spirit Awards:
http://www.filmindependent.org/spiritawards.html
Usually the Oscars and the Spirit Awards are light years apart; this year, they compare surprisingly well.
Also worth noting that Oscar voters are usually prone to throw a few "How-the-heck-did-THAT-get-nominated" picks into the mix (i.e, Jerry McGuire, Dangerous Liasons, Working Girl) but they seem to have resisted that impulse this year, for the most part. |

Cinderella Man? Ick. That was just a rehash of the equally-undeserving A Beautiful Mind, which robbed not one but TWO far more deserving films that year (LOTR: FOTR and Moulin Rouge--and those were just the ones that actually got nominated.)
I've only seen a couple of the major nominees, one of which is Brokeback. I'd be cool if that won, as it is a pretty great movie, but to a degree it suffers from "Lost in Translation" syndrome, which is to say it loses a lot of its charm when it gets overhyped. That's one reason I'm really not averse to the idea of big blockbuster-type flicks winning Best Picture: if they're going to make a big circus out of the awards, they may as well give them to a "BIG" movie that's already been a focus of a major marketing campaign. "Brokeback" is better than "Kong" or "Narnia" or "Batman Begins", but it's a movie for a quiet weeknight rental, not a gigantic hype magnet.
I've long since given up any expectation of seeing the best movie of the year actually win an Oscar, and generally just hope for the best movie "of a certain type" to win. It's not like can expect everyone in Hollywood to share my viewpoint on film anyway.

They have been doing this more often since the 1980s. I guess it's just that their tastes have remained the same while the audience's tastes have changed.
Anyway I find this complaint really annoying. The people who use this line thirty years ago would be bitching about AMPAS not nominating lower grossing arty movies (i.e Citizen Kane). For example the much ridiculed victory of The Greatest Show on Earth is an example of the Academy going for a popular movie. |

| How is this a complaint? I'm complimenting them. Usually they feel compelled to throw in a Jerry McGuire into the mix at the expense of a worthier candidate. |

Ah, okay then. Last year and 1984 were similar. It looks like the possibilities of huge hits being nominated is becoming less likely. I would think this because the audience, not AMPAS, has changed tastes.
Another strange thing about this year is that Academy is more and more following the guilds. The DGA is the King of all the Oscar Predictors and for the past four years all of their nominees were also nominated for Best Picture. Not only did this happen again this year but all of their Directors were nominated as well. As a result we have the extremely unusual instance of all five Best Picture films are nominated in Best Director.
Not to mention SAG and the actors: Only Crowe, Zhang and Cheadle were snubbed at the Oscars. And their winners matched up 100% last year. It could happen again this year.
Also Brokeback, Capote, Crash and Good Night were all nominated by the four major guilds (PGA, DGA, SAG, WGA). |

I think big mainstream hits are just as likely to get nominated as they ever were. In the 50s we had all those musicals, in the 70s we had Star Wars and Rocky. More recently we've had Gladiator, the LOTR flicks, the Sixth Sense, Saving Private Ryan, etc. There are always years without a huge smash, like this year (unless you count Brokeback Mountain). They're mostly flukes. After all, no films the audience have seen = low ratings for the Oscar telecast.

| Nobody here thinks both Phoenix and Witherspoon should win for Walk the line? The movie is fine, but it would pretty much soulless without their contribution. And what the heck, even Robert Patrick, an actor that deserves better parts, was fine in that one. If only his role had been a bit less unidimensional... |
