There is no "w" sound in German - it's pronounced as a "v" sound.
Also, there is no "th" sound. This should be pronounced as a hard "t" sound, meaning neanderthal should actually sound like neandertaal.

True, all true. And I've heard Neanderthal pronounced with the hard "t" by Peter Cushing, I think.
"Uwe" just *looks* like "yoo-wee" though, as in "There are more video game adaptations for you to direct, Dr. Yoo-Wee. Are you all right?"
