I might stand alone on this, but Ghostbusters 2.
I was enamored of the first movie and its cartoon spinoff when I was young. Then I saw the second movie...and it felt like I was watching the first one all over again.
The 'busters are back to zero, everyone thinking they're a bunch of deluded quacks, out of a job until they manage a publicity-grabbing bust, there's a montage of them catching random spooks, and about then we get back to them on the trail of the movie's big boss ghost, they get arrested, a massive ghost outbreak forces the mayor to put them in charge, against all odds they triumph against Vigo, and Venkman wins the heart of the fair Sigourney Weaver. Again.
They didn't change anything except the name of the big boss ghost and added a river of slime underneath the city.
No, as a matter of fact, there has never been one single time where I've been mellow. |

Ghostbusters 2 wasn't the worst sequel ever, but yeah, it was pretty much a retread. As far as the whole Conan thing goes, the first film is one of my favorites. Yeah it's silly in places but at the time it came out it was the most serious fantasy film going. Destroyer is cheesy fun but nowhere near as good. A sequel that really pissed me off: 2010: The Year We Cash In. No one who appreciated 2001 for what it should want to have anything to do with this mundane space thriller. You want a sequel that wrecks- nay, wipes its ass with- the original, ruining all the original's mystery and beauty, this is it. |

"Conan the Barbarian" > 10 x "Conan the Destroyer"
"Conan the Barbarian" feels epic and creates a unique landscape in which the characters inhabit. "Conan the Barbarian" is your stock standard generic fantasy that could have been set anywhere.
As far as worst sequels go: "The Crow: City of Angels" is right up there. It's got none of the charm of the original, seems overly derivative and is mean-spirited for no good reason. I've heard that "Wings of the Crow", a low-budget retread of the original film is actually worse, but I've had the devil's own time in trying to track it down.

Oh, when I say I saw Single White Female 2 and Carlito's Way 2 (which is in fact a prequel) I meant I saw them ON VIDEO STORE SHELVES. I did not mean I had seen the movies.
Although, I am tempted to grab Carlito's Way 2, if only to see who plays a younger Penelope Ann Miller.

Shrek 2 made my teeth hurt. Even the good bits couldn't mask the nostil-burning stench of pure, cynical franchise milking. Sheesh.

"Carlito's way - Rise to power" is nowhere as good as the original, of course, but it is reasonably good. Actually, it might be one of the best, if not the best, direct-to-whatever sequel I've seen so far. |

I've scanned that Entertainment Weekly list of the 25 worst sequels of all time and cannot figure out how the hell GREASE 2 did not make the list. Did they collectively block that film out of their minds or do they actually think it isn't that bad? GREASE 2 should be a gimme.

I find Conan the Barbarian a ponderous bore. I'll go with Ebert on this one: "The first Conan movie, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, was a dark and gloomy fantasy about the shadows of prehistory. This second film is sillier, funnier, and more entertaining. "
I don't usually disagree so strongly with Ken but I have to say that he is dead wrong here. The original movie is fun because it takes itself so seriously. I love the over the top warrior quotes and arguments with Krom. The second one loooks and feels cheap, with goofy villains and the hideous Grace Jones screeching and waving a stick.
I also disagree with him about the Terminator movies, the original is a great flick, but the second one is much better, with a more epic scope, and a surprisingly uplifting message. Too bad the third one ruined it. |

You can't really compare the two CONAN movies.
CTB was a pretentious yet vacuous but still enjoyable movie made by someone who had obviously never read any Robert E. Howard, and who had a script writer who just took some blurbs about Howard stories (some not even featuring Conan), put them in the Plot-O-Matic 80 (tm) and came up with... something.
CTD was an almost letter-perfect translation of the 60's/70's era Roy Thomas CONAN comic books done by Marvel. This is not to say that it made for a really good movie, but if you look at it in that light, it is a lot more enjoyable.
The CONAN TV show from the late 90's, however, was utterly and irredeemably excreble and deserves whatever fate is worse than utter obscurity.

| Actually, Roy Thomas WAS involved on "Conan the Destroyer". And he was so pissed of at how his material was treated that he ended up publishing the story his own way, as a comic book. |

Conan the Barbarian had a tremendous Basil Poledouris score, good production design, equally impressive cinematography by some guy I never heard of (Duke Callaghan???), several sweet revenge scenes, a great villain in James Earl Jones, and a nice cameo by Max von Syndow. For those reasons alone the first film shares space on my video shelf.
Unfortunately, almost everything that else that could have gone wrong with the movie did go wrong. Aside from Jones and Syndow, the acting is largely awful. Bergman was semi-tolerable but the other "actresses" came across more like strung-out hookers desperate for their next fix. (Producers' girlfriends, maybe?) The swordfighting was acceptable only to those who've never seen a Hong Kong or Japanese epic (or almost any Bob Anderson film, for that matter). There were too many needless, silly scenes; dumb dialogue (courtesy of scripters John Milius and Oliver Stone); cringe-worthy comic "relief", etc., etc.
So I can see how many people could be split down the middle on this. Destroyer, for my money, was a crappy campfest and inferior to the original. On the other hand, especially on these boards, "crappy campfest" just might be some people's idea of a good time. |

As for the broader category of worst sequels, how about:
Die Another Day The Snapper Beverly Hills Cop III

Ugh. "Beverly Hills Cop III" is very, very lame, another signal, just in case we needed another, of John Landis' decadence. Problem is, the first tow entries of the series are also very bad, so anybody trying to prove the series went downhill will have trouble doing so.
