Ken's review of Billy Jack Goes to Washington reminded me of its appearance in the Medved's Golden Turkey Awards book as a nominee for the "Worst Film You Never Saw". While Billy Jack won the dubious honor, I have always been appalled by another nominee for this award.
The Day The Clown Cried was briefly mentioned by Ken in his review and must constitute the single worst idea for a movie in history! Jerry Lewis plays a clown that entertains children before they are gassed at Auschwitz! The Medveds famously state at the beginning of their book that one of the movies therein is a complete fake that they made up themselves. I was convinced for years that this movie was the hoax!
But it wasn't. This is a must read for bad film buffs:

This is a movie that has to be released to the public at some point. God forbid that we can't lean from this history and find ourselves doomed to repeating it. |

Harry Schearer, of all people, has apparently actually seen a print of this film. He indicated that it is all you dream it would be, and more. I would cut off a toe to see it.
(Edit- I actually now have read the article and there's the bit about Harry right up front... I wasn't meaning to be redundant!)

Back in the 80's, the late lamented first version of SPY
Magazine (the only magazine to ever be snarky and mocking
and not seem insincere except for the old NATIONAL LAMPOON)
had an extensive article (written, ISTR, by Mr. Shearer)
on THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED.
Basically, the movie will never be released not just because
it is utterly excremental, but that because it was never
finished it can't be released: voice re-tracking was
never done, there are apparently whole sequences that
were never shot, there is no music. And there are
apparently some rights issues about just who owns it
due to some chicanery on the part of investors.
Perhaps, long after Mr. Lewis has passed on, someone
will be able to collate the bits into something, but
don't hold your breath.
I still have that issue in the Tomb of the Unutterable
Mess (IE, my basement), probably buried in a filing
cabinet that has that picture of Amelia Earhart and
Jim Morrison living in sin with Judge Crater.....

Pardon the digression, but did they ever reveal which one is the hoax?

| Actually this has been discussed in the past on the forum, and I think the best bet is the movie with a title involving "Mookie, the Wonder Hound" or "Hound of Norway" or some variant thereof. Apparently the dog in the photo accompanying the discussion of the alleged movie bomb is the Medved's own pet. |

We need to scan Schearer for a Zoe Chip. I wonder if he saw it with someone else - quite possibly Lewis himself? The Zoe download would presumably yield a commentary track, so I wonder who it would feature...

| R. Dittmar - Yes, it looks like the same dog in the photo with the authors as well as the "publicity" photo. Also, the name of some of the people who purportedly made the movie also show up in the introductory "thanks to" section. So "Hound of Norway" looks like the best bet. |
