Okay, enough fun.
For whatever reason, it hit me that I have never seen a Ronald Reagan film. Was Ronny a good actor?
Since we have done a through job on Laughlin, maybe we should look at Reagan for balance. Were any of his films Jabootu worthy? I hear Hellcats of the Navy was such a turkey that it practically squawked on screen.
Can anyone recommend any Ronald Reagan movies? What were his good ones? What were his bad ones?

The only Reagon film I ever saw was "The Angels Wash Their Faces". Pretty decent, but not Oscar worthey.
It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation. |

My late grandmother put Mr. President in his place soon after his election:
"I hated him as an actor, he'll be as good as president".

I could be snarky and point out that being president is essentially an acting role . . . aw heck, I guess I'll be snarky.
And yeah, he was a decent actor but not great. Nowadays he'd probably be a moderately well known character actor, but rarely a lead man (unless you updated his looks to more modern tastes as well as transporting him to modern Hollywood). I don't think any of his movies I've seen have been particularly outstanding, except maybe a few where he had a more minor role (and I just didn't notice him . . . his filmography's huge and I know less than half the movies I've seen by name).

I don't think he's comparable to Laughlin. Reagan never made his own movies and while he may be a controversial political figure he wasn't insane. To have a conservative version of Laughlin you'd need a John Bircher who produced his own films.

"and Jack Benny is the Secretary of the Treasury!"-Doc
Reagan was alright as an actor he did some bad films but overall he was pretty good.

Ronald Reagan: Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! Tear it down! Reagan smash! [Starts punching brick wall] [Inside] McDonald's Employee: What is that? Another Employee: Oh, that's just Reagan. Don't worry about it, he'll tire himself out. [Outside] Ronald Reagan: Reagan sleepy. [Curls up on ground in fetal position] |

Ronald Reagan appeared in 53 movies ranging from very good to just standard. He was a buddy of Errol Flynn, Alan Hale et al at Warner Brothers and can be seen in many of their movies. I agree that as an actor he wasn't great but also wasn't bad. He had a light touch that was just right for light romantic comedies. The Democrats tried to embarrass him by showing Bedtime For Bonzo but it backfired when people actually saw it. Bedtime is actually quite amusing and Reagan is very charming in it. In the early 1950s his acting career petered out and he was cast in bottom of the bill movies like Hellcats of the Navy (which also featured Nancy) Davis so so he entered politics by first becoming very involved in the actors guild. During those years he was also a very popular television host and even had a successful nightclub act. Reagan returned to the movies in 1964 when he got the chance to play his first villian in "The Killers". Even here he is not great but not bad at all.

What people forget about Bedtime for Bonzo is that it is actually about the age old nature vs. nurture question. |

Wow! I saw Bedtime For Bonzo a long time ago. But I thought the roll was done by Fred MacMurray.

Don't I know it. That to me is the most interesting part of Reagan's story. Reagan was a definate left winger and even tried to join the communist party. He also lead strikes against the film industry.
But during some union business(I don't know if it was a strike or what) he became worried that he was hurting the film industry which lowered their profitablity. Because of this, some of his left winger pals decided he needed some encouragement. So someone placed a anonymous call to Reagan and told him that if he didn't continue standing up for the union that they would throw acid in his face and ruin his acting career. This scared Reagan enough that he started to carry a shoulder holster. The incident transformed Reagan in to the right wing conservative that we know and love.
I wish we knew who called Reagan and made that threat. Because I love point at him and laugh. Remind him that his action may have started the destruction of the Soviet Union. Then I would say "Boy, did you mess with wrong guy!" _____________________________________________________________________

I liked him in "Bedtime for Bonzo," but that's the only one I've seen.

For years, I heard raves about Reagan's performance in King's Row. I finally saw it a few years back. He's nothing special in it, so I don't understand what all the applause was about. (Even professed Reagan-hater Gene Siskel had praised his performance in that picture.)
One of the few other Reagan movies I've seen was The Winning Team with Doris Day. That one was pretty good, actually, with Reagan playing Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander. Of course, it was about as historically accurate as The Adventures of Robin Hood, but hey, what can you do? |

Reagan also used to announce baseball games in his very young days (Cubs, I believe) by remote, meaning he'd watch the play-by-play come across the teleticker and announce the game from a studio, using sound effects to simulate cracks of the bat and roars of the crowd at the appropriate moments. This was quite a common job for radio announcers in the early part of the century, when there were no major league franchises west of the Mississippi. The story goes that one day the telephone line went down temporarily in the midst of an at bat with the count 1 and 2, so there were no pitch results coming through the ticker. Reagan simply vamped, calling foul balls and telling amusing anecdotes about the batter for something like 8 minutes before the backup line was hooked up and the play result could be shared.

Walter Cronkite did that too, except with a Southern Cal-Notre Dame football(American) game. Charton Heston was a left-wing dude too, he fought for the desgrergation of the film unions and helped in the civil rights campaigns in the south.

I always found it funny how he got that job in the first place.
Here is Reagan's own words about how he broke in to radio:
[url="http://www.ronaldreagan.com/radio.html"]Ronald Reagan talks about his radio days.[/url]
The guy who interviewed him sounds like someone James L. Brooks might have based greenskeeper Willie on.
I do have another question.
When Reagan died, did the academy awards that year recognize his death? Love him or hate him, he was one of them. They have made oversights in the past. Such as Deforrest Kelly. But did he show up in the "In Memorium" portion of the show?
And commodorejohn, I love your profile signature. As a former NASA employee let me just say (pinching nostrils)"It's not in our charter to investigage the UFO"

What's so left wing about that? BEDTIME FOR BONZO is a lot of fun, and it is about the "nature vs. nurture" debate. |
