Remakes are not always a bad thing. Wizard of Oz was a remake. Ben Hur was a remake a couple times over. The real question is, is the decision to remake a movie motivated by bean-counting or an artist's vision?? This was a case of the latter. It may not be perfect but it's well worth seeing and it holds up on its own merits.

The fact of the matter is that there is just no reason to remake one of the most iconic films in history. Not only is there nothing to add to the original story, but there's not even a technical dimension that can be much improved upon. Maybe you could improve on an old classic like The Blob with some state of the art special effects, but the effects in the original King Kong are almost as impressive today as they were back in the 30's.
No offense, but IMHO that's ridiculous. KK '33's effects are still amazing- as a product of their time. But you show that film to a young person with no historical context and they'll laugh it off the screen before they get back to their X-box. Some of the effects in KK '05 will look silly in a few years as well but right now Kong himself is the most photo-realistic and well realized performance by an F/X character in history. And when people complain about some of the CGI looking fake they never mention the magnificence of 30's era New York- because I think it never enters their heads they are looking at CGI and not a real city. It's stunning. And there's plenty of other reasons- PJ realized characters more fully, enriched the back-story- all manner of things that anyone might not want to agree with the results of, but are valid reasons to remake a film beyond just updating effects. But KK is about F/X. KK '33 was a showpiece in its day and so is KK'05 is its, for the most part anyway.

It pains me to say this because I am a very big fan of Peter Jackson's pre-Lord of the Rings work. Its too bad he couldn't have used his industry clout to create something original rather than indulge an old obsession.
Well, you know this is coming- maybe you oughta see the movie and then see what you think. If you still feel the same I won't argue with you *g*
Coming soon- Eraserhead: The Musical!! |
