Assuming this doesn't star geriatric Shatner and Nimoy, it remains highly questionable whether or not audiences - hardcore Trekkies, Trekkers, whatever - will accept Kirk and Spock played by others.

Wow, Harve Bennet has been pitching this idea for almost thirty years. I wonder if he's involved this time around. Personally I always thought it was a cool idea IF they get the right actors and that's a big if. You need guys that can do the characters, not just impersonations of Shatner and Nimoy.

From the article:

So will this be a sort of Star Trek : College Days deal? Oh boy. I seem to remember that concept being shot down by the creators for years. |

Hummm...Animated might work. Play with the voices to get a younger sound ( Lots of examples ), and a good look, then yeah, maby. Read a couple of books about Jim and his dad, Samuel Kirk. Not bad ,i thought.

I disbelieve.
This rumor has been floating around for a while, and though Variety is a better source than, say, AIN'T I A TOOL news, I'll believe it when JJ himself says it.
Personally, I think its way wrong to get someone with a 'personal style' to helm a new TREK anything, and I think JJ's style of trying to convince you that he has a plan when he's just pulling things out of his hat at random at each step won't fly with TREK, but at least he'll be better than Brannon Braga.
But: I still put this in the category of Fanboy wankery.

Trek jumped the shark when Deep Space 9 ended. That show plumed such extremes of the sublime and the ridiculous that the only thing left for the franchise is anti-climax and self parody.

Ugh. As a costumer I can't help but wince at those shirts. Did they use cotton?
Folks, please remember to choose your fabrics wisely -- 99% of SF shows use a stretch fabric of some sort (original Trek used a low-loft velour if I remember correctly). Making a costume is lots of work to begin with, a few extra dollars on the right fabric makes all the difference. SF heros don't have wrinkles.
Oh, and if your costume needs good drape, crepe-back satin looks fantastic both on the stage and close up.

The MSN article actually hits all of the major complaints. The only one I would disagree with is the need to bring back Kirk and Spock. A clean break would be nice. I believe they either need to have the entire galaxy face a threat that comes from another galaxy or they could have a faction break off from the Federation and depart for a new galaxy where they can change the rules of how the Feds act.

http://www.starshipexeter.com/ Here's another Star Trek fan site. It's not better than New Voyages. I think that Jabootu has touched this one. Watch it and weep.
It's Coacoa Puffs, Bob. I have no idea why, but it fits the equation. |

| I think it was yesterday when J.J. Abrams himself anounced that the rumour is false. Meanwhile, I'll keep watching Galaxy Quest. It has all the Trek bashing I need right now and, something they should be ashamed of, the starship battles are better than in the last Trek films. |

I only watched with the sound off. I am weak. Even at that, I barely survived. (The opening credits were pretty sweet though!)
