My favorite film of the last ten to twenty years, back in theaters...with a twist:

"Disney has staked it's claim to the Halloween weekend as The Nightmare Before Christmas prepares to roll into theaters on October 20, 2006. The movie will be digitally remastered and shown in 3-D, making it the second re-release of its kind for Disney (Chicken Little was the first).

"When visitors came to visit the set of The Nightmare Before Christmas, they were always amazed by the intricate sets and beautiful puppets -- that they actually existed in miniature. It was disappointing to see this effect lost on film. By remastering for 3-D, I hope that some of this magic can be captured and shown to the audience in a way they've never seen before," said Henry Selick, the The Nightmare Before Christmas director.

The Nightmare Before Christmas was originally released in 1993, grossing over $50 million domestically. The October release figures to be at digital theaters across the country. Chicken Little's re-release played at over 80 locations and The Nightmare Before Christmas figures to greatly surpass that amount.

Word has it the 3-D glasses handed out at each screening will collectible rather than standard fare."

PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court?
HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Interesting. That means we get to see this process work on a live action film that was originated as 2-D. That should be some indication of how older films like Star Wars will fare under the new process.

I wonder if the 3D glasses will be at all usable for those of us who wear glasses already.

I wear glasses and I went to see the Terminator: 3D show at Universal Studios LA a few years back. The polarized glasses they used fit over my regular ones great. Hopefully this will use something similar.

Yeek. I don't think I'm revealing any industry secrets by saying Disney is being a bit optomistic.

When Chicken Little opened in 3-D it did so in, if I remember, 84 theaters. This is because that is every single 3-D capable digital projector in the world.

Sure, by Halloween there will probably be more, but not much. SMPTE still hasn't formalized the 3-D standard and most companies are holding off on producing projectors that might be obsoleted before the year is out. Even if the standard is complete, there is plenty of work before they can start rolling out finished equipment.

Don't expect a wide release, but if you are near a theater go see it. These projectors are sweet!

Oh, and yeah, the digital cinema does use the shutter system. I think it's synced with an infra-red flasher from the projector booth. The T:3D stuff is not digital cinema, though.

They use the shutter system?? Yikes. I've never encountered a shutter system fast enough not to have horrid flicker. Terminator uses true twin projector polarized lens 3D and that's the only way to go. If they plan to get people into theaters with 3D as the great white hope I really think they need to ditch the shutter-glasses thing- unless there's been a major advance that I'm not aware of.

Whoops, looks like the shutter system is optional. Disney used a circular polarization system. It appears the 3-D separator is an optional attachment and any system will work (a reasonable plan). The issue for projectors is the 48 FPS, though. There is already a tremendous amount of data transmitted and I don't know of any dual-cable LLE2 systems in production (though in all honesty I don't work in that end of things, but the LLE2 requirement was introduced after Chicken Little came out).
