Surprise, surprise, Dolph Lundgren is back! Although according to the IMDB he never left, I gave up renting his films after Retrograde and The last patrol left my brain completely desecated.

However, when I learned tow of his latest direct-to-DVD efforts were directed by the man himself, I had to rent them. And surprise, surprise, they're actually pretty good.

Don't take me wrong, Lundgren is no Orson Welles, but both The defender and The mechanik are not only more slick and well shot than most similar productions, they're also almost pure, honest 80ish action films, the type Steven Seagal or Van Damme did in their prime.

Amazing. This, together with the fact that The Defender, the one that features Jerry Springer as the president of the U.S., is actually the best of the two makes me think the Evil Guvernment has been pouring LSD in my water supply. By barrels.

Dolph Lundgren is OK in my book.

After his bout of mainstream success, he
seems to have not taken himself very
seriously (as RED SCORPION proved, where
he basically did a spoof of Rambo) and
the fact that he's moved into directing is
quite heartening.

I actually rather liked him in the first
PUNISHER movie, where his less-than-emotive
acting style for once helped project the
image of a man desolated by the murder of
his family. If you forget that it was
otherwise absolutely unlike the comic that
it was based on, it's a neat little film.

I don't particularly like Dolph (he moves and acts too often like a moving cupboard), but I found quite disheartening that he had ended up in crap like Retrograde or Agent Red. Over the years he's been in a handful of OK if not good action flicks (one of them, Silent Trigger was even a very good one), and unlike people like Seagal of Van Damme he has resisted well the temptations of self-parody or self-indulgence, which is quite telling.

Not a big fan of Lundgren although he is the star of one of my all-time favorite b-movie: I COME IN PEACE. Love, love, love that film!

That one doesn't do the trick for me, although it is a lot of fun. If I had to pick a favourite Lundgren, it would be, besides Silent Trigger, The Peacekeeper. It has plenty of things that keep you watching, such as a nuclear attack on Mt. Rushmore or a car chase throughout several rooftops.

Showdown in Little Tokyo with Brandon Lee is for me the definitive Lundgren movie. A B-movie kung-fu/exploitation/action lollapalooza if there ever was one.

Rocky 4. Man..."I must crush you". It's such an 80s moment. I enjoyed Universal soldier too. I harbour no illusions about the quality of it, but it works as pure spectacle.

As for the real Dolph; I saw an interview with him several years ago and he seemed like a pretty nice guy. He said he'd go back to his career in chemical engineering at some point, but at present, making movies was "too much fun". I thought that was pretty honest.

If we're talking cheesy Dolph Lundgen movies (Not those prestigious high quality ones he does)I still get some mileage out of the cringeworthy Golan and Globus production of Masters of the Universe. The sad thing is that it actually kind of managed to be worse than the He-Man cartoons.

Speaking as someone who was all about Masters of the Universe, that feature film was an absolute travesty. It boggles my mind to occassionally hear people talk about the film with genuine affection, and I don't even mean cheesy b-movie so bad it's good affection. It's just an awful awful awful film.

True. Even the cartoons had more action & nudity.

I guess I never watched the cartoon very much as a kid (Though I had quite a few of the toys) so I suppose I took the movie at face value- a cheesy b-movie with lots of obvious Star Wars rip-offs and hammy acting. I'm kind of embarassed to admit it but I actually thought it was a good movie when I was about 7.
