I think the quote is

"The last man on earth sat in his room. There was a knock on the door."

But "lock" is good too.

Yes and no.
Your quote was called "The Shortest Science Fiction Story". After it was made public, some wiseguy wrote what I quoted, which is even SHORTER and may have inspired "The Last Man On Earth".

"The Queen is testing poisons." CLEOPATRA, 1935

The last WOMAN on earth could, in all probability would, have knocked on the door. Does anyone remember James Thurber's "The Last Flower?"

Yeah -- that's what they did with a radio drama that expanded the "shortest SF story" into half an hour.

In truth, Will Smith is a very fine actor but Hollywood has him pigeonholed as a jive-talking, eight-year-old-in-a-grown-man's-body wise*ss. He could quite easily play The Thinking Man's Sci-Fi Hero if only someone would write a script that played up to his (and the audience's) intelligence.

My short-list of bankable stars who could play an effective everyman in an "I Am Legend" adaption: Crowe, Denzel, Smith, Clooney, Damon. And let us not forget good ol' Johnny D.
