From today's IMDB "News" Section:

"Despite earlier reports that Lucasfilm would be re-releasing the original unedited theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars movies on DVD, it now turns out that they will be copied from the laserdiscs of the films released in the mid'90s, formatted for the conventional TV screen and not wide-screen "letterbox" versions. The revelation has provoked anger among Star Wars fans, expressed on such Internet sites as www.thedigitalbits.com, and www.hometheaterforum.com. VideoBusiness.com quoted Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh as saying, "We hoped that by releasing the original movies as a bonus disc, it would be a way to give the fans something that is fun. We certainly didn't want to be become a source of frustration for fans.""

No, no, of course not. Of course, those of us who liked the original trilogy just fine must understand, toy sales from these versions are very limited.

George Lucas Sucks.

I've been all through this ad nauseum on the AV Science forum. needless to say, I'm with you. What really frosts me is that it's basically a doggy treat, and you have to buy the friggin' SE's AGAIN. I've got 'em George. And I'm not buying them again at a premium limited edition price to get rips of the Laserdisks. If he put out the OOT as a decently priced standalone set, even with relatively crappy on-anamorphic transfers I'd buy them and be stand-up about it. But if he's going to bend me over for an inferior set and not even use any lube, well...

...hey, what's this?? Behind the couch? Why, it's DVD-R's of the Definitive THX Laserdisk Editions of the OT! Where'd THEY come from?? *g*

That article is technically incorrect. The DVD will be widescreen, not fullscreen. However, they will not be anthromorphic DVD, but will be letterboxed versions from the laser disk masters. The basic upshot is that they should be at least as high quality as the best laser disk ripped bootlegs out there, but not much better. mostly because it's not anthromorphic.

For those that don't know, here's an article explaining. Basically, anthromorphic shoots a widescreen image in a square frame which is then stretched into the longer picture so that everything doesn't look all tall and thin. As a result, it manages to capture more detail for better image quality. For folks who still have standard 4:3 tv sets, this won't matter too much, but those who have widescreen TVs, you will notice a lack in picture quality.

The reason why there's such a stink over this is because anthromorphic DVDs are standard in the industry. To give you an idea, my copy of Prophecy. You know, the mutant bear flick that is reviewed on this site. That one was released as an anthromorphic DVD. Heck, Radioland Murders, Lucas's biggest flop since Howard the Duck, is going to be released as an anthromorphic DVD, but the original Star Wars trilogy is not.

We can only hope that he's just testing the waters with this and will make a better version once Blu Ray or HD-DVD comes out.

He also said he would never ever release the original films on DVD, but now he is. You really can't trust lucas anymore.

Even so, it appears they still had the laser disk masters in the vault, so it was only a matter of encoding that onto a DVD. Only the picture quality will not be as good as we would hope. And there'll probably still be things like this:

(BTW, as the Buffy people say, I don't want to be all "correcty" at you but the term is "anamorphic". Your explanation is basically correct though!)

That's because he's put himself in that position with lousy decisions and utter lack of respect for his fans. I have enormous respect for the guy as an idea man and a technological innovator- he's even made three excellent movies in his career as a director (the first three). But in this matter he has brought the lack of goodwill squarely on his head through his own actions.

I don't post here very often. In fact, this is my first post here for what seems like almost two years. At any rate, I'd heard about these DVDs through rebelscum.com and thought, "Finally." Now, though, I'm wondering, are they actively trying to piss people off? Or is this meant to be their way of discouraging viewing the old versions of the movies? The notion that they'd consider the original theatrical versions, the ones that made the series famous, only worthy to be "bonus" disks, is revolting.

Sorry to be harsh but....the hardcore Star Wars fans are complete sheep. They'll put up with anything, buy anything, do anything. I thought the first three were very good, until I saw the Ewoks in part 6 and said to myself..."they're just teddy bears. They've in there to sell toys".

The second three are garbage. The CGI is so overdone..you can smell it.

Part 1 - Mannikin skywalker, midoclorians, and "messa here to sell coloring books", saw the Big Race....is he really doing Ben Hur? Said this was going to be in the arcade soon....took a month. And Ben Kenobi left just Shmi behind.... When I next see part 4 I will cheer when Vader kills Ben...it's the most justifiable homicide in cinematic history.

Part 2 - the WORST dialogue in film history! Worst! The CGI car chase...barf.
This movie could be a half-hour shorter easily.

Part 3 - Almost watchable. No Jar-Jar but Padme dies of a broken heart....seriously? Are effects the only thing Lucas does well?

And he'll jerk the fans around forever and they'll shell out the bucks every time. Why not?

I'm glad that I've finally seen a Uwe Boll film in the theater, and proud to own the director's cut. I'm also happy that it's the best film Boll has made to date (that I've seen). I hope that some day, it will be possible to watch a film he made and actually enjoy it in the way he thought it would be enjoyed.

Well, not exactly. Lucas came up with this primative, furry race of critters called Wookies that capture the heroes but eventually fight on their side. Originally they were less than four feet tall. We know this because Richard Dreyfus said the concept got mentioned while making American Graffitti and Dreyfus thought he could play one. Lucas later made Wookies seven feet tall to make them more menacing when they capture the heroes. But, when making the first movie, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to make any sequels and he decided he like the Wookies too much to never get to do them, so he made the co-pilot of the Millenium Falcon. unfortunately, this made Wookies to sophisticated to be used as a primaitive tribe, so he when back to the original idea, called them Ewoks, and the hate has never stopped since.

Those who've listened to the NPR radio drama recognized that scene as a retooling of the skyhopper race Luke has with one of his friends on Tattooine.

According to today's IMDB (May 30th), "Frankenstein Versus The Space Monster" is supposed to be out on DVD today--in anamorphic widescreen. If THAT film merits anamorphic, and Star Wars doesn't...I'm starting to think it IS all divorce settlements that are driving these decisions.
