It's actually interesting in one of the earlier drafts of Empire, according to the Annotated Screenplays, Yoda tells Luke that manipulating objects and such requires tapping into the Dark Side of the Force, and therefore, should be used only when absolutely needed.
That Mad article was pretty funny as well. Did anyone pick up that the explanation for Luke's "real" father was uncannily similar to Anakin's origin explained in the prequels? I can't believe that was written in 1982. Maybe Lucas read it and went, "good idea!". |

Ask and ye shal recieve.
And as far as the AT-AT's being a terror weapon, well that does seem like a likley Empire tactic. Just look at the Death Star. I mean it would take FAR less energy to destroy the civilization on a world (or even wipe out all life altogether) than it would to shatter a planet to dust. (eg look at the efficiency of the nano-bot doomsday weapon in Colony Wars: Red Sun.) Combine that with terrible speed and maneuverability and you have one of the worst strategic weapons ever concieved. But as a terror weapon, just wow. Imagine seeing that thing in orbit around your planet. And if that didn't get the message across I willing to bet a warning shot would.

Let me make sure I have this right. Originally, Yoda would say that one must tap into the dark side "when absolutely necessary."
That's exactly what Denethor said about using the One Ring in Return of the King. And look how HE turned out. |
