Good gawd. Could they at least wait until this technology evolves enough that people actually have access to it before they get all horny to regulate our safety regarding it?? Geeze.
At least somebody actually pointed out the three laws aren't really very relevant until robots get intelligent.

I'm of mixed opinion about this sort of thing.
On one side, there will be more autonomous machines running around in the future. So it's certainly not silly or goofy to start speculating about safety issues. For example, a Roomba can't avoid bumping into people, because it can't see (although it does have an IR interface). Of course, it doesn't matter because a Roomba won't hurt anyone it bumps into.
And, of course, one of the quotes is simply fatuous -- nobody builds vacuum cleaners that could suck up a baby, and existing liability law would cover that anyway.
I guess that if engineers want to start discussing it, swell -- but I'm not at all convinced new laws are needed.

Roomba side note:
My mom got one, and on the remote control there is a BIG red button that is not explained anywhere in the manual.
She was showing me how to steer it and then said, verbatim: "What does this red button do?" and went to press it.
"DON'T TOUCH THAT BUTTON!" I screamed.
She froze.
I just smiled and said "I always wanted to do that."
(It's the power cut off, apparently). |

Was Will Smith reading this, and thinking "Sequal!"?
Also....has Snopes confirmed this?

That's wonderful, MikeC -- I'd almost visit my parents for a chance to do something that evil.
Almost.

quote: a 37-year-old Japanese factory worker, climbed over a safety fence at a Kawasaki plant to carry out some maintenance work on a robot. In his haste, he failed to switch the robot off properly.
So how is this a "robot kills human" story and not a "human fails to follow safety regulations and is killed" story? The next time a housewife leaves the iron plugged in and forgets about it, will we see "iron burns down house"? |

Yep, gastrorobots. That's JUST how the Matrix got started. They'll be breeding us in pods, like cattle.

Damn, this whole robot thing is accelerating out of control:
Robot Dogs Evolve Their Own Language
From This e4engineering article (via Slashdot, of course):
quote: Researchers led by the Institute of Cognitive Science and Technology in Italy are developing robots that evolve their own language, bypassing the limits of imposing human rule-based communication.
“The result is machines that evolve and develop by themselves without human intervention,” said Stefano Nolfi, the coordinator the ECAgents project.
Slashdotters may already have dibs on quite a few of the jokes, but it'd be foolhardy to underestimate Jabootuites in a snark match to the death... |

Had to relay this kinda surreal ad I saw by following a curious Google ad link on this page:

From Epson Robots, the "global leader in [...] high speed, high precision robots."
I know it's mostly just factory automation equipment, but it still has the feel of an ad out of Total Recall or Minority Report or something... |
