Army Sent to Fight Millions of Invading Toxic Toads
"The Australian state government called for the army to be deployed against the invasion of toxic toads! Battalions of imported cane toads are marching relentlessly across northern Australia and the West Australian government wants soldiers to intercept the environmental barbarians. From the article: "The toads, Bufo Marinus, were introduced from South America into northeast Queensland state in the 1930s to control another pest: Beetles that were ravaging the sugar cane fields of the tropical northern coasts. But the toads now number in the millions and are spreading westward through the Northern Territory, upsetting the country's ecosystem in their wake. Cane toads have poisonous sacs on the back of their heads full of a venom so powerful it can kill crocodiles, snakes or other predators in minutes."

As a Queenslander myself, I can tell you these things are big, ugly, and very hard to kill. Golf clubs hardly make an impact. When I was somewhat younger, one summer night I attempted to exterminate the local population in our yard by a variety of methods. I remember stunning one (with a golf club) , dousing it in kerosene, setting it on fire, and watching it just hop away across the yard leaving burning patches of grass in its wake. It did die eventually, but a little more help from the golf club was required.
For a movie, you would want them grown to giant size I suppose. Brown, warty, ugly, poisonous and ginormous would be a powerful combination. Throw in super-intelligence, due to a little genetic meddling by an evil biochem corporation receiving government funding to make an anti-terror weapon, an escape based on a natural disaster caused by climate change, and the toad menace would be all set.
Who's got ideas for a name of this movie?

...and don't forget their very keen sense of revenge.
I suppose these things must be a real nuisance in your neck of the woods given this bit from the Wikipedia article on them:quote: "The children's novel, Toad Rage, by Morris Gleitzman is set in Australia; it is about a Cane Toad named Limpy who goes on an adventure to find out why humans go out of their way to run over Cane Toads."
I feel much the same way about Canada Geese, and people from areas that aren't beset with hordes of `em have a hard time comprehending that.
So for the title, how about The Second Plague?

I favour-
Time To Hit the Toad.
Anyway, I certainly hope those little bastards don't make it into WA. The big desert between us and Queensland is good for something. |

Is there any pest species that didn't start out as a project by the governments of the 1930s?

Japanese Beetles just hitched a rid on some bulbs to get into North America, so no government or business brought them in.
I remember as a kid Gypsy Moths defoliating most of the trees where I lived and I had to deal with the sleezy catpillars hanging down from trees and getting their "silk" all over me when I was mowing lawns. Some idiot brought them over to try and start a cheap silk industry. Didn't work, obviously.

There's already an excellent movie about this, and it's one of the most hilarious documentaries I've ever seen. It's called Cane Toads. Made in 1988.
As a former Queenslander, I can also attest to the tenacious toads, which actually make quite a satisfying 'pop' noise when run over. My parking lot used to be littered with flattened cane toad skins. Me and a few mates drew chalk outlines around them during one particularly boring barbie.
I'm against animal cruelty, but every once in a while Mother Nature provides a nice guilt-free extermination project. Also, there has been evidence in recent years of one particular species of bird that has figured out how to flip the bastiches upside-down and eviscerate them without getting poisoned. Vive les avians!

Aren't these the toads you lick to get high?
Why not just round them up & sell them in baggies on streetcorners?

...or import Hippies into Queensland to manage the toad population. Then keep a robotic scarecrow in the wings for when you're done with the hippies & want the land back. ...
