OK, I watched the remake of Pink Panther under great duress. And you know what? It's actually not bad. Really. Many very funny moments in it. It's a nice return to form for Steve Martin who abandoned zany comedy many years ago. And therein lies the rub. Martin may arguably be one of this generations greatest comedic actors- but Peter Sellers was greater. I imagine Steve feels the same way. Why would he set himself up in a head to head competition with such a legend?? Why not just create a new original character and movie? In the supplemental material people keep repeating a mantra that "Steve is not trying to copy Sellers, or be compared to him." But of COURSE he's going to be compared to him. And he's going to lose.
But at least maybe Steve is ready to get back into real comedy again.

Coming soon-
Eraserhead: The Musical!!

I'll give this to Steve Martin:

Yes, he's done quite a few parts lately
(PINK PANTHER, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 1 and
2, LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION) strictly
for the cash, but he has also been writing
pretty good novels, making some indy films
(SHOPGIRL) and, apparently, buying lots of
art.

So, I can understand where he's coming
from, even forgive him, since I can see him
wanting to finance his love of art and
creativity as best he can, even if some
might say he's helping undermine creativity
at the same time.

I don't think he did PP for the money, though. I think he did it because he thought it was a good idea. If I had seen this movie in a vacuum, not knowing the older ones existed I probably would have been fairly impressed. Maybe I'm just too old- heck, most people that went to see it have probably never seen the originals anyway.

OK, I respect All of me, The little shop of horros, L.A. Story and The Spanish prisoner and Novocaine. That last one is a must see, if only for the weirdness of the whole thing.

Not the most popular entries of his by a longshot, but I enjoyed Bowfinger and Leap of Faith. I'm usually not that eager to see Steve Martin films (not sure why), but these worked for me.

Bowfinger -- am I misremembering, or was that the one about the low-budget film company tricking a major star to star in their movie?

That was an amusing film, and probably one of the most unique plot ideas in film comedy.

That'd be the one. And besides all that, it skewered Scientology in a big way with its subplot. Good stuff that, and ballsy too.

I didn't like Bowfinger as much as his early stuff, but it was enjoyable. And Mindhead made the whole movie. LA Story was very good ("This painting makes me emotionally... erect.") Haven't seen All Of Me in years but I remember liking it a lot (especially the guitar solo- "You didn't like that??"). Dead Men is still my favorite though. Genuinely funny, martin gives a great performance and it used the Gump/ Zelig device to much better effect than either of those films- first. A great homage to noir while ripping it at the same time.

Yeah, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is probably my favorite of Martin's films, if only for the "I wanted to grab her heaving body, strip off her clothes, marry her, and turn on the whoopie machine" line. I've always liked Martin, but he's never been in a flat-out "Top Ten." But heck, not many people have.

Bowfinger is underappreciated, I think. And the scientology jokes were almost as good as the gloriously insane plot.

Bowfinger also took a pretty funny dig at Anne Heche.
