This is not your father's Transformers.
Scientific sidenote: Does Mars have enough of an atmosphere to heat up a probe to incandescence during landing? |

Man. I was never a Transformers fan in the first place but I feel your pain over this one... It would be like waking up and finding out The Evil One (let us not invoke his dark name) was going to direct The Hobbit...
Coming soon- Eraserhead: The Musical!! |

Mars's atmosphere is dense enough to heat up a probe. The sky on Mars, however, is actually kind of a salmon pink and not blue like in the trailer.

I felt some genuine fear when the words "Michael Bay" appeared on the screen.
oooh. I feel cold.

Odd that Bay would allow such a mistake to occur, especially considering how scientifically faithful "Armagedon" was...

Ambrose speaks wisely. Mars landers are equipped with an atmospheric shell, and can even use parachutes. In fact, JPL can dip satellites into the Martian atmosphere and use the drag on the solar cells to adjust their orbit.
However, the Martian atmosphere is not thick enough to slow down a lander enough for a landing. Mars landers use rockets, or large inflatable bags, to actually touch down.

The Mars Expedition Rovers are still operational, two years into their 90-day mission.
That team deserves some major pats-on-the-back, I think.

Oh, sure. Next you'll be telling me that there are no fluffy white clouds in the Martian sky, like there are in the trailer. |

Hmmm, maybe the Martian Lander went through some sort of space warp, and landed somewhere OTHER than Mars? That would actually make more sense.
Therefore, I doubt Mr. Bay thought of it. |

The only reason I have for liking Transformers is that Orson Welles did the voice of one of them.
The one that said:

Actually, they just got lucky. They figured the Martian dust would eventually obscure the solar panels to the point they would be unusable. However, Martian storms have been blowing off the dust. It is good engineering that they have lasted this long though. But, good engineering always needs some luck.

Hehe- just for you, in case you never heard it- the infamous Orson Welles Frozen Peas spot that got parodied (almost word for word, except for the naughty ones) by Pinky And The Brain in Yes, Always. I love this.

Thanks a lot Sardu.
I saw that episode of Pinky and The Brain and wondered brand of glue the writers were huffing to come up with THAT. With that link, I now know what that was all about.
