I watched Deer Hunter a few years ago and had pretty much the same reaction. It was plodding and dull beyond words. It might be my very least favorite DeNiro film of all time at this point. That said, the Russian Roulette scene is amazing, though.

I had pretty much the same reaction. I found the Deer Hunter to be very dull and overlong. The opening sequence with the wedding etc. was as boring as actually having to sit through the wedding video of a bunch of strangers (Or non-strangers come to that) and the quality of the film making seemed almost as bad, though to be fair I was watching an old VHS copy of the film. Though, yeah, the russian roulette sequences were pretty memorable and some of the drama of the later half of the film might have actually worked in a much more lean version of the film.
