Oddly enough, CAVE DWELLERS was the first MST3K episode I ever saw and has remained a favorite of mine ever since. Now if you want to talk about episodes I cannot sit through then 12 TO THE MOON, SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, THE DEADLY BEES, and HAMLET come to mind.

Maybe it cost more for the rights or something, but when they can do it, they really should.
I bought the first set for that reason, and haven't bought any of the others for the same reason. Since I never saw MST3K broadcast, it helps me to know what they're making fun of if I can see the original. I need at least a glancing familiarity with the original. |

| And since we're on the subject, what precisely is the rights hold-up with the DVD version of MST3K-The Movie? Since Universal already owns the rights to The Island Earth, (as opposed to, say, Amazing Colossal Man) wouldn't a DVD release be a foregone conclusion? |

There was a dvd but it's long gone out of print and gets easily a hundred dollars or more on ebay. I don't see Universal bothering to reissue it.

Oddly, I think the movie was just re-released on DVD recently - in Germany, but with English and German audio tracks. You can find it on Amazon.de - catch is, it's Region 2 and PAL.

UPDATE: It's out!
One question: what's a T-rex doing on the DVD cover? |

Appropos of nothing, I'd just like to say I have a copy of the MST3K film on DVD.
Heh.

John, any bonuses on that DVD?
I wish someday they'd release the original cut of the MST3K movie... before the studio botched it. Footage got cut, the robot scenes got reshot (badly), and many one-liners during the showing of This Island Earth were scrapped because the suits were afraid that audiences "wouldn't get it". |

Me too. I think I picked it up around '98-'99 at a mall. They had about 8 copies. I wish I'd known then...

I can't recall any, but I'll double-check this evening.

I have the MST3k movie on VHS. It's one reason why I refuse to abandon my VCR for an all-DVD setup, alongside taped MST3k episodes I have yet to replace with DVDs (official, or...otherwise).

Thanks, John.
Like I said, if they ever do a DVD re-release of the movie, they might as well release the original "uncut" version.
I mean, what the heck, right? |
