Yeah, absolutely. Actually, a lot of This Island Earth was cut from the DVD, making the film impossible to follow unless you had seen the original version. I hate it when they make a film they're making fun of worse than it actually is.

I never saw This Island Earth outside of MST3K. Looking it up on IMDB (and the MST3K movie, too) I noticed how many die-hard sci-fi fanatics were P.O.'d over TIE being turned into Crow and Servo's latest punching bag.
Of course, you know the story behind all that. It was the studio's fault again. Execs insisted that MST3K parody a good movie on the grounds that no one wanted to sit through a "bad" movie. (Boy, talk about film execs not grasping a concept!) |

The first episode I saw from the Comedy Central years (the only one, in fact, until I bought the tapes and DVDs) was Gamera vs. Guiron. Sadly, none of the Gamera episodes have been put out yet. But the news that one of the Godzilla ones is now available fills me with hope for that, some day. And also childlike glee, for I've always wanted to see one of the Godzilla episodes. It'll be nice to have GSI too. I've almost worn out my tape of that one. "I don't know how but I just became sterile!" *laughs*
---------- This is my second post. YAY! |

I don't quite grasp the outrage. Good films can be MSTed too.

True, but bad films supply the MST3K writers with unlimited ammo. Good movies don't.
It doesn't get any better (worse) than Manos. |

One of the films/experiments covered is Godzilla versus Megalon.
This is significant because GvM is one of the "Sandy Frank" films. As I posted here some time back, the Sandy Frank company was not amused by MST's treatment of their Japanese import properties (Godzilla & Gamera movies, Mighty Jack, Fugitive Alien 1 & 2, etc.) and at one point made it know that they would NEVER clear Best Brains to release them in retail DVDs. (They got pissed off about it too late to stop the broadcast episodes.)
That line has now - obviously - been crossed. While it would be interesting to know why Sandy Frank 'blinked,' what matters is that all the other MST/Sandy Frank films are now presumably candidates for retail release as part of upcoming collections.
Good news indeed. Movie sign!
