Hi all.
Anyone else looking forward to this one?
Ken just gave a slight mention to this one in his Blog, and I must admit, I am REALLY jazzed about this movie.
Initially, the trailers touting "By the producers of Saw and Hostel" had me thinking "Oh, great, the Cave redone with more dismemberment".
However, this is the second film for Neil Marshall, whose initial movie "Dog Soldiers" was, although flawed, pretty darn cool. Given the spate of positive early reviews, "The Descent" is looking like a purely fun experience.
If you like dismemberment.
Oh, and I think we can forgive the reviewer who said "the most effective cinematic chiller since 'Alien'"... His review seems well-balanced, otherwise...

I've seen THE DESCENT and it really is that damn good. And it isn't very gory at all. In fact, people that go in looking strictly for blood and guts will probably be disappointed.

| Really? I'm surprised. Usually when a film is directly compared to another film like that in the ads, the film in questions sucks the hair off a really big dog. |

I loved The Descent!!
Dogs and soldiers was OK in my book, but this one is a must see, it's packed with blood and claustrophobia. Go see it now. |

The Descent is pretty great. There was one scene I saw (which didn't even have the 'monsters' in it) that literally had me sort of hyperventilating, and I was watching it on a TV set on a Saturday afternoon. I think some people seeing it huge up on the screen are genuinely going to freak out.
I don't know if I'd call this a classic, but it's easily the best horror movie I've seen in some years.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

| I agree. As a side note, I watched it on the big screen with a fella who is into a more intelectual kind of cinema (he's not a wimp, but still mainly uneducated in serious horror movies) and when we were leaving the theatre I could tell he had every hair in his had raised. |

OK, I just gotta ask...
How have so many people seen this movie already? Has it already been released in Europe, or have people seen it at festivals, or bootleg copies?

it has already enjoyed release in Europe.
I have to tell you, the more I read the more enticed I get. And I was so sure this one was best avoided when the poster was a rip-off of part of the Silence of the Lambs poster and all the comparasons to Alien. |

Hey, the thing was directed by the guy who made Dog Soldiers. That's a big mark in its favor right there. It features several women, NONE of whom appear to be complete bimbos. And it's a horror movie that's actually SCARY?!
M. Night Shyamalan is gonna have nightmares about this pic for years to come. |

THE DESCENT would have already been released in the US last year if it hadn't been for a certain stinker called THE CAVE.
Now if only the US will hurry up and get a release date for the South Korean monster movie THE HOST.

| True. It's one of those films that work better if you enter the theatre unprepared. |

Saw it tonight. The sound in the theater was terrible (and I've written a letter to the parent company; no good complaining to the staff), but that doesn't change one fact:
This. Is. How. It. Is. DONE!!!
Two minor quibbles (unfortunately, one of them is the ending), but everything else is spot on. Neil Marshall deserves to have his name on the lips of every horror fan out there. |

Yeah, the ending kinda bugged, the original UK ending is better, but honestly I thought it could have ended effectively
Spoiler
with Sarah just sobbing in the car, no last second scare or anything. I think that would have worked dramaticaly if you wanted a "happy" ending.
Juno was the most interesting character I've seen in a horror movie in a long time.
