IF TRUE, I think the question of Mel Gibson's sanity, as well as a few other questions about him (ahem) might have been settled Friday night.

Here is what is purported to be the official police report on his arrest (Acrobat file):

It's handwritten and hard to read, but page 2 is where it gets real interesting. |

Oh, God.
You know where this is going to lead. Don't you?
His father and his most successful film.

Taking bets: how long before Matt and Trey turn this into a "South Park" episode? I say two weeks. Max. UPDATE: Mel apologizes:

Which means he said it, which means that what he spouted when inebriated probably represents his true feelings. I want to like Mel, honestly, but that's pretty scary. And what's with the Saddam raggedy beard and the streak? Is that how he actually looks now?
I had actually though Matt and Trey were a little hard on Mel in the "Passion Of The Jew" episode, but once again they may be closer to the truth than they get credit for... I still think attributing the violence in The Passion to a latent masochism in Mel is off base but then hey, I might be wrong about that too...

I believe Matt and Trey were having fun with the fact that a large number of Mel Gibson movies involve him being tortured or roughed up (Lethal Weapon, Payback, Braveheart, just to name a few) and that when you couple those with the gruelling torture scenes in Passion, it seems like he has some kind of torture fetish.
Maybe Mel was just tyring to get the cops to torture him, like that moment in the South Park episode where he wipes his own feces on a building in full view of the town saying "I bet you wanna torture me now, don't ya!" ;) |

Well, now that you mention it, that's true. But the torture in The Passion is entirely the point of the whole thing- it's not like Mel added it in that instance. I find it entirely probably that Mel has, if not a masochistic streak, a martyr complex. Which, I guess, are facets of the same thing...

Mel Gibson's devotion to 'alternative historical theories' (in English: Conspiracy Theories) is well documented.
That he would spout off disagreeably when inebriated is, alas, not unexpected.

The line about all the major wars in history being caused by Jews was particularly ridiculous.
I suppose it was some Jewish Wehrmacht regiment that decided all on it's own to invade Poland. Once they were engaged, Hitler had no choice but to follow up with other units rather than suffer the international embarassment of looking like his Jewish units ran the army.
And then, when those crafty Jews convinced the Japanese to bomb Pearl Harbor! Man, what a coup that was!
Unfortunately, I'll never be able to watch another Gibson movie again without hearing this garbage and seeing...yeah, Saddam Hussein and the Unabomber's illegitimate love child. |

| Anybody besides me know the joke about how Mel Gibson plans to make a movie about Masada-in which he commits suicide at the end? |

Sure it was. Never heard of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion? It's all true, man. AND they planted all those explosives in the Twin Towers on 9/11. It's all true, I read it on the internet.
(I actually argued with a guy like that on another forum. He gave me a link which also included a story about how Star Wars was dictated to George Lucas by God, who was in a starship orbiting Mars; I suggested such links did not improve his credibility... besides, why does God need a starship?)

I'm not some full-bore Mel groupie, but I do want to point out a couple of things:
1) His apology was not the normal Hollywood "excuse and justification camouflaged with the 'sorry' word":
quote: "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable . . . I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."
2) We all like to assume that the things someone says when drunk or otherwise "out of control" represent the "real" person. Looking at my own life, though, I can't see that as true. Hell, I've never even been drunk, but I know that the things I say when enraged are so twisted by spite and a desire to hurt that they don't reflect what I actually believe; they are the anger taking over and finding any stick to beat with. Mel was raised by a father who does believe all sorts of anti-semitic rot, which Mel has repeatedly repudiated in his adulthood; I see nothing surprising in the idea that, when his mind has been reduced to a sludgepit by alcohol and the shame and guilt of such a relapse, he lashes out using the prejudices which were lodged in his brain at an early age, despite his attempts to root them out.

GOOD FOR YOU, NATE! By the way, are you fasting this Sunday, the first Sunday in August? I'm fasting tomorrow, the 9th of Av. I ran across a column on the Internet today, by a rabbi who told Mel Gibson he had to put himself through a 12 step program to cure himself of his bigotry, said program to include a vsist to Auschwitz. I emailed the Rabbi and told him to leave the tacky loudmouth (Mel Gibson) alone, that Gibson was 50 years old and if a 50 year old man needs a visit to Auschwitz to show him antiSemitism is wrong, he's pretty unredeemable. I am sick of public mea culpas for tacky remarks. I remember Billy Graham, apologizing publically for a tacky remark he had made 20 YEARS AGO!!! It reminded me of a Stainist show trial. |

Yup, I'll be fasting this Sunday.
(And don't you just love the celebrities coming forward to say they'll never watch another Mel Gibson movie? Half of these same people have a "Support the Intifada" T-shirt in the closet...)
