On a kinda-sorta related note, why isn't the Holocaust museum located in Berlin instead of Washington? Presumably, the Washington museum is the biggest that is devoted to the subject. Maybe it ought to be right over where the Nazis were hiding.

No no, it's there as a warning to America, because everyone knows we're on the brink of fascism and totalitarianism. It CAN happen here.

I think Nathan's right. I'm willing to give Gibson this much credit; I believe he might well have been honestly horrified by his outburst, and not just because of the effects it will have on his career. As another example, who among us hasn't lashed out during an argument and taken intense pleasure from hurting a loved one (and I'm speaking verbally, at least for myself), and then been utterly mortified by this a moment later? Is that the 'real' you? I'd like to think not.
I don't drink, not out of religious conviction, but because of family problems in that area. Situations like this help keep me from ever regretting what I'm supposedly missing.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

I will say this about Hollywood: if this is the end of Mel Gibson's career, then Tinseltown is a bigger bunch of hypocritical idiots than I gave it credit for. I suspect that Gibson would admit, in private, that he has some deep-seated prejudices, but that he can recognize them for what they are and shove 'em away when he's in control of his faculties. One could say the same thing about many admirable people.
Ken took the words out of my mouth when he stated that people who are intoxicated can say and do things that they would find repellant when lucid (I've seen it; it's a lot like delusions in mentally ill people). I've drunk enough to not want to drive for a bit, but I've never gotten sloppy drunk, because I'm scared of what I might say, and I'm fairly passive. Many in Hollywood have done a lot worse than Gibson could ever do, while they were stone cold sober. Roman Polanski is only the most obvious among them.
If he were shut out of Hollywood forever, I'd advise Gibson to stay sober and wash his hands of those clods. The better part of them have more to answer for than he does. |

"Whoever first said there's truth in wine must have been drunk," -- Robert Graves, _Claudius the God_.
Of course, the irony there is that the chracter who said that was telling the truth...

Thanks God we have Rob Schneider to make a call for sanity. Cut and paste from today's IMDB headlines:
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo star Rob Schneider is the first actor to publicly announce he will never work with Mel Gibson due to the anti-Semitic remarks he made when he was arrested last Friday. Schneider took out an ad in Hollywood trade paper Variety slamming the star for his behavior in "An Open Letter to the Hollywood Community." The ad appeared yesterday and said, "I, Rob Schneider, a 1/2 Jew, pledge from this day forth to never work with Mel Gibson-actor-director-producer-and anti-Semite." Schneider then went on to say even if he were offered the lead role in Passion Of The Christ 2 or a "juicy voice-over role in his new flick Apocalypto and spoke ancient Mayan" he would still turn them down. He also repeatedly praised Hollywood talent manager Bernie Brillstein for publicly saying he would refuse to work with Gibson because "I just don't like bigots." The actor continued by saying he had recently directed a film called Big Stan in which there was a part for a Nazi gang leader "which apparently Mel would be perfect for." Schneider said he would still not cast Gibson in that role and ended the letter by saying, "Of course that would only be after I talked with my financial backers. Some of whom share Mr. Gibson's hankering for a good bottle of tequila. Because, after all...I don't get to call all the shots." |

This from a guy who threatend violence on someone who criticized his movies.
Hey Rob! Know this. Mel Gibson doesn't use toliet paper. He uses your films. And to much greater satisfaction than watching them.

ROFL! Hey Rob, reality check: You were NEVER going to get in one of Mel's movies anyway. It's like me announcing that I've decided I will never accept a Nobel Prize for Medicine.
BTW, I abhor what Mel said but I'm also willing to forgive him if he makes true amends. Let's see how much of the sensitive, caring, morally superior Hollywood community does the same, shall we...

I couldn't help but notice that Schneider was sure to throw in a movie title or two of his in his rant. This isn't an honest criticism he's leveling, it's a very cheap publicity ploy.
Wanna know what's a lot worse than a man making anti-Semitic barbs in a drunken rant? A man who conforms to a negative stereotype when he's stone cold sober. Rob Schneider would be offensive if he weren't so pathetic. |

If Mel's career is indeed over (which I doubt), I wonder how many people will blame it entirely on this without considering that his next movie is performed entirely in the Mayan language. (And which I'm dying to see, BTW.)
In fact, a few people have suggested the friction Mel is facing in trying to get the movie released--or possibly the lack of quality of said movie--is what triggered the bender in the first place.
