Also don't forget Victor Salva, (responsible for the "Jeepers Creepers" series and "Powder") the guy who was convicted of molesting his lead star, who was a little boy. And unlike Polanski, Salva gets to make film that are often centered around underage males. If Mel's career is finished, Hollywood is going to have explain why child molesters deserve a second chance.
This doesn't mean that I support Mel's behavior by any means. Not only did I care for his anti-Semitic comments, but what I even didn't like he was driving drunk. His comments HURTS people but his drunk driving can KILL people. Having heard stories from a fellow paramedic who had to scrap dead families off the road from accidents of drunk driving, I almost feel that people spending too much time on the comments and are forgetting he was on the verge of doing something worse. If Gibson really wants to make amends, his first step is to battle alcoholism. He needs to earn respect for himself and quit engaging in behavior that is self-destructive. In order to gain respect for others, he has respect himself first. Once he can do that, then the healing process for his comments can begin.

Yeah, the real interesting thing is that almost no one in Hollywood is upset over Mel's DUI. That's the real crime. He could have killed someone. No joke. But just about everyone and his therapist in Tinseltown has gotten a DUI at one time or another, so they're not going to badger him over that. Whereas his pathetic stream of anti-Semitic epiphets, while offensive, hasn't harmed anyone.
Other posters make good points about Polanski and Salva. I'd like to throw Mark Wahlberg's name into the mix. Remember, before he became a "star" in such cinematic achievements as The Perfect Storm and Boogie Nights he spent two years in the pokey for beating and robbing a Vietnamese man. Hasn't stopped him from getting an acting job. Charles Dutton went to prison for double manslaughter way back in the day; after he got out, Hollywood opened its doors to him, and I don't recall any actors taking out trades blasting Dutton.

One reason I'm willing to go to bat for Mel Gibson is because of an article I read about a year back or so. It stated that Gibson was taking a real toll from the criticism he got for The Passion of the Christ, and that his wife was worried he was one step away from falling off the wagon. Scarily prophetic, with hindsight. But that's the thing; Gibson's critics were getting to him. And that doesn't sound like the behavior of a bigot.
If I were to define "bigot," I'd say it was someone who has chosen to embrace his or her prejudices, and I don't see that with Gibson.
But I do see that in Ted Turner. You can also see someing like that in a few of Gibson's detractors, who have reacted with obvious glee to what's going on. Add to that, Tom Cruise and John Travolta (to name but two) are slavish devotees of a man who wasn't exactly a picture of tolerance. Their careers going into the toilet, even after one jumped on a couch and the other played a Psychlo.
By the way, Flellis, the reason I mentioned Roman Polanski over Victor Salva is because Polanski got a standing ovation after winning Best Director. Salva, thank God, will probably never have that kind of acclaim. But you're right about Tinseltown not willing to throw him out on his ear.
Oh, man, I need to get off this subject. But the thought keeps coming back: Gibson's paying for his statements and his drunk driving as we speak, which is more than you might expect Hollywood, with its relaxed idea of what morality is, would demand. |

Schneider took out an ad in Hollywood trade paper Variety slamming the star for his behavior in "An Open Letter to the Hollywood Community." The ad appeared yesterday and said, "I, Rob Schneider, a 1/2 Jew, pledge from this day forth to never work with Mel Gibson-actor-director-producer-and anti-Semite."
And if James Woods, for example, were to take out a similar ad in Variety swearing that he would never again work with Gwyneth Paltrow or Whoopie Goldberg, because he was so disgusted by their cracks about the President, Schnider's screams of "McCarthyism" would be heard in Alaska. |

Hey Rob! Know this. Mel Gibson doesn't use toliet paper. He uses your films. And to much greater satisfaction than watching them. ______________________________________________________________________

Well, look, the guy can't pick his father. Some of his father's comments obviously seeped into Mel's upbringing. Not to mention he takes his religious beliefs seriously and really believes that anyone who doesn't share it will go to hell. An interviewer mentioned his wife didn't share the same beliefs as him and then asked does that mean his wife go to hell. He replied yes. Add alcoholism in and it's not surprising you get a confused picture where the "bigot" label can't be easily inserted on Mel.

After The Passion, its seems that its detractors and supporters have mischaracterized Gibson. Because his religious beliefs are conserative, both his detractors and supporters have assume that the man himself is an ideological ally with President Bush. But in an interview with Sean Hannity, he mentioned he had doubts with Bush because of the Iraq War. He later appeared with Michael Moore to accept the People's Choice Award and claimed the media is trying to create a split between Moore and him but there really isn't a split and mentioned that no one can tell him what we're doing in Iraq. In describing his upcoming next movie, he refer to Bush as a fearmonger. While none of these remaks has caused his detractors to change their opinion of him, it has caused some of his former supporters have joined the detractors in kicking while he's down. It's a shame cause the guy needs help.

Although both are Scientologists, their careers went down the tube for different reasons. Travolta has made one too many crappy movies recently but you get the feeling Taratino can save him again or one right move can put him back on top. The man has fallen down and gotten up many times before. Cruise, on the other hand, digusted the public (especially the women) with his remarks on Brooke Shields, his pompous interview with Matt Lauer, and lately hasn't improved things by hiding Suri away from the public and not marry Katie despite telling the public he loves her SO SO much. Hollywood is simply treating Cruise and Travolta by their bankability nothing more. As with DUI, there are too many people from Hollywood that are in Scientology, that Hollywood is not going to raise a stink about their beliefs.

Polanski had that kind of acclaim before he became a child molester. As horrible as those actions are, no one would deny that Polanski is a talented director. Granted, that doesn't mean he should've got the standing ovation. (Heck, he shouldn't even got the award even if he was clean. The Pianist was not his best film by a long shot.) Salva is nowhere near as talented as Polanski is and has showed no sign he's going to get there but what's more disturbing is that Polanski doesn't make films that have 13 year olds as the lead or exploit his lust for the underage youth like Salva does. Salva is blantant about it as Woody Allen is with his films. (Even in his latest film, Scoop, while Woody thankfully is not Scarlett Johnasson's love interest, he does pal around with Scarlett for no real dramatic reason other than you can't help thinking the real Woody wants to be with her.) I remember seeing the trailer for Jeepers Creepers 2 when it came on. Before I even knew what the film was, I saw a group of shirtless teenage boys singing together in the bus. A bunch of girls try to come and join in the chorus. The guys either ignore them or give a sign that they're not interested. Later, some of the shirtless guys are lying together in the cornfield. At the time, I thought, "Why are they showing this trailer before Freddy Vs. Jason comes onscreen?" Then I realize, its Jeepers Creepers 2 and NOT suprisingly, I found that Salva was the director. What bugs me most here is that not only Salva allowed a second chance by Hollywood but he's allowed to indulge in it.

Don't forget Tim Allen's drug dealing as well. I guess bad behavior before you get into the business is OK by Hollywood as long as you don't do it on Hollywood's time. |

| Oops, I musta made a mistake with my delete button. I meant to say that Cruise and Travolta's careers are NOT going down the toilet right now. (Good one, Brad, post something that says the opposite of what you were trying to— me and my butterfingers.) But as for them being bankable.... well, Flellis, you're right, unfortunately. |

The other thing I think you have to remember about Polanski is that Patricia Krenwinkle and company smeared the blood of his girlfriend and unborn child on the walls of his house. That may not excuse what he did with the (barely) teenager, but it would explain why he might be in a state to make some really poor decisions. Being with a girl that young is pretty inexcusable, but not as inexcusable as the type of pedophiles that do things to children way younger than puberty.

"If Mel's career is finished, Hollywood is going to have explain why child molesters deserve a second chance."
Hollywood cranks Holocaust movies and I've never, ever seen a movie about the 10s of millions Stalin killed. It's too easy to say the Jews control Hollywood (all Jews? Everywhere?) but I think there is very little Hollywood will not forgive but talking about Jews is forbidden.
Remember what Gibson went through with the Passion: protests, reviews written before the movie was released, people sneaking into reviews. And don't forget that overwhelming wave of anti-Semitism that movie might create and which lead to....nothing.
It was a tiny budget but Hollywood wouldn't make it. Once made Hollywood wouldn't distribute it. Gibson did everything on his own, made a fortune, and he's hated for it.
Maybe Mel's just stupid. You do NOT talk about Jews. You don't even THINK about printing a picture of Mohammed. That's what respect for others is about. Now, is you'll excuse me I'm going to see the DaVinvi Code, I know it's about the Catholic Church so I don't doubt it will be respectful and dignified.
---------------------- I'm glad that I've finally seen a Uwe Boll film in the theater, and proud to own the director's cut. I'm also happy that it's the best film Boll has made to date (that I've seen). I hope that some day, it will be possible to watch a film he made and actually enjoy it in the way he thought it would be enjoyed. |

ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH? THE KILLING FIELDS? COMING OUT OF THE ICE? THE CONFESSION, which is very explicit about the antiSemitism of the Stalinist show trials? Talking about Jews may be forbidden, but talking about Israel surer than hell isn't. Ever hear of Vanessa Redgrave? |
