quote: PERSONAL: Erik enjoys fantastic stories, especially those by Jules Verne and the whole school of European writers (including H G Wells, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke) who combine science and imagination to dream the impossible and point the way to the future.
I did not know that Isaac Asimov was a European writer.

That's what so creepy about this. It 's not just a national hero, like Captain America or Captain Ireland or Captain Albania or something. It's the notion that every single European, no matter what country you're from, should want to emulate this bizarre arbitrary standard of what's really great about the entirety of Europe. It would be like us going to Brazil with Superman and going "Hey! You're pretty confused about your culture, aren't you. THIS will teach you." I'm not saying that Brazilians can't dig Superman, but that doesn't mean they need to be told that if they don't do things the way its done in Metropolis they suck.

Sounds Jewish, unless I miss my guess.
And Europe is such a hotbed of pro-Jewish, pro-Israeli sentiment!
Notice that all the members of the team have hobbies and interests that really aren't all "that" multicultural?
Notice that I've probably spent way too much time on this subject... |

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing a Capitane La France ... and, oddly, one of the things that kind of jumps out at you about Captain America and El Santo (who deserves, if no-one else does, to be "Captain Mexico") is that their personalities and values are pretty similar. Which, actually, I think is cool.
But yeah, I think you're on to something there. If I had to pitch something along these lines, I'd work with a team of twelve, one from each nation -- sort of try to emphasize that you can share values without turning bland. Of course, the problem there is that there would be some characters who turned out to be cooler than the others...

Isaac Asimov? Yeah; Russian Jew, emigrated to the US in his early childhood (three or four) with his parents shortly after the Revolution, grew up in New York. Parents ran a news stand.

The more I think about it, it's kind of depressing for some comic creator in the EU to think it's just swell to blend together Germans, French, Spanish and Italians and dozens of others into one homogenous, bland mix, identified only with a generic ideal. It might be inevitable that Europe's societal boundaries will break down eventually, but it seems a real shame to actively disregard all the distinct cultures and histories and try to establish some sort of baseline all-encompassing European.
For God's sake, his civilian name basically means "Man man." Even his name is noncommital. |

quote: If Captain Euro was really representive of a typical European, he'd be about 50 years old, on a pension, and childless. He call in sick to work about 20 days a year, he'd take a vacation from superhero work about a month and a half every year, and he'd spend a lot of time loitering at streetside cafes surrounded by tendrils of cigarette smoke while exuding an air of world-weary sophistication.
Having lived some years in Europe, that profile is so accurate considering the "new European," it almost hurts. This comic must eminate from Planet Euro, or Cloud Euroland, where the inhabitants are young, successful, sexy, and smart international citizens who not only know what's right, they do something to make things right. It's likely a comforting fantasy.
BTW, my first post. I'm Joe "Renfield" Meadows from HORROR-WOOD who just re-stumbled into Jabootu just as Ken is going into a (hopefully) temporary hiatus. This MB is sure active, though, and I'm glad to be here.

Hey, Joe, glad you've started dropping by. Horror-Wood is a great site, and essential stuff now that the print publications (Scarlet Street, Psychotronic Video, etc.) are dropping like flies. Keep up the good work.
I am just on hiatus, and will (very occasionally) still be posting reviews here before returning 'full time' in January.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Psychotronic is history? Too bad. I was a big Mike Weldon fan way back in the day.

Those villians look pretty wimpy, "let's steal a painting" ohhhhh, scarry stuff. For the next issue they should send the Euroteam to Lebanon or Kashmir.

I was thinking the Wonder Twins could look down on these guys.
Howard the Duck.
The list goes on.
It is almost like a conscious effort to create another generation that looks on passively while the Sudetenland is annexed, hoping that some Neville Chamberlain guy will show up--this time in a goofy outfit--and set things right with diplomacy.
Why didn't they call him Castrati Man and the Whatevers?
