What rule do you follow when you decide whether or not to buy a DVD?
My rule is that if I rent it more than 5 times then I should buy it because by the 5th rental I might as well have bought it. So it's just cheaper to own it.
Doesn't anyone do anything different?

Most times I make up my mind to buy a DVD the moment I've seen the movie for the first time. It's just a gut feeling; either I think it's a movie I'll want to watch over and over again, or I don't. If it's the former, I usually get it the moment it comes out on DVD.
This past summer, Superman Returns screamed "Rent" not "Buy" to me. That is, if I ever decide to see it again at all. By contrast, last summer when I saw Batman Begins my immediate reaction was, "This movie shall be MINE."
Sometimes it's a good rule to watch certain movies twice to see if they'll even hold up to repeat viewing. Minority Report was a movie that wowed me the first time around, but on a later viewing it left me rather flat.

After a while you just "know" the criteria for films you want to view over and over again vs the "quick fix" entertainment movie. With me, I'll gladly rent an standard summer block buster action film. However, the classics will always find me in the mood to watch them depending on my frame of mind at the time. Therefore: "Daredevil" = rent "House on Haunted Hill" (Vincent Price version) = own

I usually wait until it's listed on Ebay. I'm a nut about a bargain.
She was bred in old Kentucky, but she's just a crumb up here. |

Precisely. That's why for rentals, I go with Netflix and for purchases, I go with Ebay.

I'll buy a DVD if it's in the classic horror "vein" I'm interested in, and it's not hugely available. Otherwise, it's rent or wait until it appears on Starz.
But I'm cheap, too. I buy most DVDs either on eBay or used, usually at 75% off retail.
