I have a donut for anyone who can place the tune being parodied in the chorus.

I know wikipedia & everyone refer to this as a style parody of "We Are The World," but that notwithstanding, the chorus more directly mirrors something else that I can *almost* remember, and it's been bugging the bejeebers out of me. My wife thought it was perhaps the Friends theme, or maybe that Glass Tiger hit (there was only one, right?) Neither of those quite seem to nail it for me though.

I really don't think that he's drawing directly from any single tune or piece of music. We all think of Weird Al first as a purveyor of parody version of pop hits, but at least half of his output is original songs --stylistic parodies, perhaps, but not direct take-offs.

And if that was a slam on Glass Tiger there, I'm gonna have to meet you behind the school after last bell, man.

I don't think it's entirely derivative, but I can't shake the deja vu that that the first 8 beats of the chorus evoke, and it still feels like there's something more comparable than "We Are the World." But alas, the donut seems to be getting stale.

You're absolutely right though -- one of the things that impresses me so much about Weird Al is, like you mentioned, his ability to spin original, stylistic parodies. Direct parodies take lyrical finesse no doubt, but at least the original song supplies you with a ready-made template for the music. To pull off a style parody, you have to have a keen grasp of the sub-genres and niches that are evolving at any given time, and moreover, you have to be able to distill them into a recognizable essence & create a new, fitting example apart from any existing one. That takes a rare kind of genius.

Re: Glass Tiger, having only one major hit is no crime; I have mix CDs galore full of one-hit-wonder-hits.

If you dig genre parody you'll love Ween (at least their later albums, the first 3 can be difficult to get into):

Glass Tiger had at least two further hits in their native Canada, both from their Diamond Sun CD, the followup to Thin Red Line which never really made it south of the border.

Well, as my first post, let me warm up the donut:

The tune it reminded me of was the Simpsons song "We're Sending Our Love Down The Well". Here, have a listen: http://www.simpsoncrazy.com/downloads/music.shtml
