My name is Paul, and I'm a Galactiaholic.

After archiving & going back to watch all of season one, I've come to realize that my entire life is going to crap because I just can't stop watching episodes. In fact, I'm exhausted from simply trying to enumerate everything there is to love about this series; if I don't get help soon, it won't be long before I'm jobless & homeless.

It could be worse. At least you're not a Star Wars fanboy.

I have yet to start watching my season 2 dvds. I still have a few months to watch them. And the second half should be in the mail soon.

Great show though. Pilot was great. The actual episodes started a little slow, but it really picked up. And everything I've read has said season 2 is even better.

As long as I'm done before Season 3 starts.

Do these still exist? I mean seriously - do they? Hasn't Lucas pretty much incinerated his own fandom at this point?

Oh, they still exist alright. Even the ones who hate Lucas for the later episodes are still head-over-heels for the original series.

And it could be still worse--you could be a Star Trek fanatic.

I was a Star Trek fanatic, until Voyager and Enterprise. And I went from fanatic to waiting for the last two Trek movies to come out on DVD.

As for Star Wars, I also didn't bother to see Clones in the theater, and I have yet to see Revenge of the (Bull)Sith. This may be a minority opinion, but I think that the first Star Wars was the only truly great one of the bunch. Empire and Jedi could've been every bit as good, but Empire's plot structure had some big problems, and Jedi gave us the one-two punch of (ugh) Ewoks and the horrendous Leia-is-your-sis retconning.

I've said it before: you can see the difference between a director coming off a successful character-driven comedy and making a very risky fantasy adventure, and a director who hasn't sat in that chair for twenty years, now with a hundred mil plus, and no one to slap him in the face and tell him he's screwing up. The sad part is, they're the same man.

Star Trek fanatics are pocket-protectored horn-rimmed MIT types who memorize trivia about the power output of the Enterprise-D. Star Wars fanatics are 300-pound thirtysomethings who live with their moms and think the Force is real. I know which I'd rather be.

Also, while I agree that the very first Star Wars is the best of the bunch and one of the very best movies ever made, I think the other two episodes in the original trilogy are very good movies, and while the new trilogy can't compare to the old one, it's not nearly as universe-shakingly horrid as people seem to think. Seriously, watch Battlefield Earth or The Creeping Terror or really, anything on this whole site and then try to tell me about how Episode II is a bad movie.

Yes, but isn't saying something is better than "Battlefield Earth" the ultimate definition of "damning with faint praise"?

True, but I'm saying that Episode II, the obvious worst of the lot, is, even with all its many flaws, still orders of magnitude better than something like BE.

Orders of magnitude better than BE still isn't all that great. (Dontcha just love stirring the pot?)

Clarifying something I said earlier, I didn't mean that Empire and Jedi were bad films. Far from it, they were actually quite good, despite some serious flaws. But they weren't as good as the first one. (Empire the number-one best sci-fi ever?? I don't think so.)

The rumor mill has it that the pocket-protectored horn-rimmed MIT types are more into Babylon 5. Star Trek lost most of its geek panache somewhere.

I dunno, I've known a number of geeks who are into Star Trek, although Babylon 5 is indeed a strong contender. I think it just takes a certain type of geek.

Another vote for the original Star Wars. I'm also a fan of Trek up to and including DS9.

As to Battlestar Galactica, I find the rotund, pockmarked, and bespectacled Edward James Olmos to be too much of a distraction. Between him and Mary "No, my face is not melting" McDonnell I often find it too difficult to even look at the screen.

On the other end of the spectrum, that leggy, six foot, blonde "Cylon" is such a pander to sex-crazed (deprived?) fanboy geeks that I can't very well take her character seriously either.

Yeah, I'm mostly talking about the hip, with-it geeks.

...Oh. Never mind.

I just find the characters to be wildly inconsistent. Plus, there aren't many characters to really like on the show. And the sex factor is really just worthless. Does a sci-fi show really need near explicit sex scenes?

Too much of BSG is based on the characters being stupid.

Of course, I'll watch the show when it starts up again....with only soft objects within my reach.

The ROPe gives you three options, convert, submit, or die. There is a fourth, resist.
