You'd think not, but a lot of modern sci-fi seems to center around the idea that in the future everyone will have lots of sex with lots of people all the time. For example, in the otherwise-brilliant Ringworld, the male and female lead rush off to have sex about once per chapter, for no apparent reason at all. Then later the male lead meets a former Ringworlder ship's prostitute, and they go off together and have sex a lot. I don't understand it, and it majorly detracted from the flow of the book, but it's not uncommon in modern sci-fi.

I know that your basic point here was that the sex served no real plot point, but I can't help but be amused by the phrasing.

Another annoying trend in modern TV sci-fi (and on the Sci-Fi channel in particular): the hero is always a petulant frat boy wannabe.
Call it the Gil Gerard syndrome.
Frequent character attributes: Never quite serious enough, too cocky by half, often disdainful of authority (even competent authority), prone to the occasional tantrum, childish, barely literate, and frequently competitive with (and sometimes even hostile toward) strong, opinionated women.
If these character types are intended be audience surrogates, that's one audience I want nothing to do with.
Carp all you want about Star Trek, if nothing else at least that show made the thinking man's sci-fi hero a series staple (Spock, Picard, Sisko). |

ZW, on BSG, the annoying "guy" happens to be Starbuck. Is she really worth the headache?
Commodore, you are right about "Ringworld." If I remember correctly, in one book they had "vampires" that caused you to want to have sex even. It really got ridiculous.
The ROPe gives you three options, convert, submit, or die. There is a fourth, resist. |
