Whats this?
I'm back, returned from the grave like an unknown specter, to proclaim doom on you all.
DOOM! DOOOOOOM!!
....Sorry. Long summer.
Anyway, if any of you remember that I said I was going to review a movie (like what, a month ago now?), that fell under when, half way through the first page of my thunder birds review, I understood that, I can not type fast enough to justify myself doing this for any amount of time. I've always been a slow typer, and just this post takes me about thirty minuets to get through (I know this because I can see into the future). Anyway, in a desperate attempt to end the tedium that I'm in right now, I've decided to ask you all here a question thats been bothering for the entirety of my summer vacation.
The kicker? It involves movies, which, as I recall, you guys seem to be interested in, in some sort of way that I can't quiet put my finger on. Call it a hunch.
Anyway, to those of you still here (hey, come back! I'm not done yet!), the question is, does high school suck as much as it does when portrayed in the movies?
I say this as a High-school student myself, having just (well, in two weeks) entered the 11th grade. The only reasons that I might not experience the true hell it is to go through high school is that I have a pretty good school, and that I am not the target of any aggression because people think I'm weird (Last year, I did a speech for my public speech class on how the elf people on the cover of rice crispies are in a constant gay love orgy thing, and I'm also a contortionist, and my talents are seen frequently throughout the school).
I really have no other idea why I do not experience the non stop abuse, drugs, suicidal and homicidal kids, cruel teachers, and underage sex that so prevalent in any movie made about high school ever.
Any reasons?
(I must apologize for my terrible spelling, as spell check can only find so much) |

Man, if I could have signed up for that "endless underage sex" school, I SO would have been there...
But seriously, for a moment.
No, of course High School is not as bad as portrayed in the movies. (Well, almost never -- there are a very few who are indeed truly cursed during their school career) Movie writers of course have to exaggerate to try and make their movie "funny" or "dramatic". Real life hardly ever lives up to these examples.
Also, the teenage years tend to be the most stressful to the developing person, and everything that happens then seems to magnify in importance to the teen living through them. On reflection, though, usually years later, those dramatic events weren't really all THAT bad...
However, this does not mean that I would WANT to relive the time... (shudder)
Oh, yes, before I get shouts of "Oh yeah? I bet you were the captain of the football team and dated cheerleaders!", I will say that I was in the marching band and president of the math club my senior year, and it was never that bad for me or for anyone I knew. So, being a card-carrying geek, I feel fairly well qualified to comment on this subject...

I went to high school in the early Seventies and I can say that real life students are not as boring and cliched as portrayed in movies. At least not in Florida.

I think that a lot of "high school" movies are written and directed by a lot of adults that are likely still haunted by their experiences in high school. Even into their 30s.
Personally, I almost never even think back to those times. Kind of like how I never think back to basic training or middle school or any of that. Being an adult is so much better! Naturally, I tend not to watch cliched high school movies either.
I'm not the target demographic audience for that kind of thing. Really, I didn't have a very high opinion of teenagers when I WAS a teenager. I knew that as a group we were largely vapid and filled with an overinflated sense of our self-worth and importance. I cringe when I read some of the stuff I wrote back then!
The last "high school" movie I can remember watching and enjoying (the qualifier) was "Twelve O'Clock High". |

Other than the usual abuse for being a "brain" (nerd or geek for you non-80's people), it wasn't even close to what typically happens in high school. I would bet though that most of us here went to suburban or country schools. Some city schools might reach the level of chaos shown in the movies.
Actually, if I look at a lot of those HS films, I end up thinking "Man, I would be kicking those kids' butts too." In other words, I end up rooting for the adult who is supposed to be the bad guy.

I also went to high school in the early Seventies and we kids were pretty lively. In fact, I look back with amazement that I made it through high school without a major injury or a police record. But we sure had fun.

Most high school/college/family movies have about four differently-shaped holes they pound their characadroids through. According to many of the high school/college movies I watch, I was supposed to be a terribly selfish, self-centered, stupid Narcissetta because I was in cheer for 8 years. Then, afterward, I was supposed to be unemployed, broke, whiney, fat and look back on it all like it was best time of my life as I went nowhere while resentfully watching the bookish wallflower speed past.
But somehow in real life that didn't turn out to be the case.
I want my money back.

Well, there's the Cheerleading Narcissista and the Bookish Wallflower Who Makes Good. What are the other two types?
And I would never call you a stupid Narcissista. Smart-mouthed Narcissista, maybe, but not stu-- Uh oh.

I spent most of high school at my friend's house getting high and listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra albums, so I can't really comment *g*

Show-off.
I never ran a mountain race, but I've been known to run my mouth off something fierce. |
