Man!! I guess his luck had to run out eventually, but to get killed by a stingray after all the crazy stuff he did- that's just sad.

| What a shock. He seemed like a good guy, too. He will be missed. |

When I first saw him on television, I said out loud, "This guy is totally BONKERS!"
My most vivid memory is when he was holding a rattlesnake in Pennsylvania and while he was talking about it 2 more slithered between his feet. You could see the concern on his face. He VERY slowed moved off. When it was over, you could see that his adreniline was really pumping.
Adios, Steve.
Rest In Peace. |

Very, very sad news.

| I always thought it would be a crocodile that got him. But unfortunately, his early death is no surprise. I can respect his efforts as a conservatonist, but he took some foolish risks. |

That's the crazy thing- it's almost like up to now he had a deal with some supernatural power to protect him and the contract ran out and all the bad luck hit him at once. He had such an amazing affinity for animals and their moods and has survived so many scary situations- this is just hard to believe. Generally stingrays just aren't aggressive. And if they do sting, it usually isn't fatal. and apparently the poison didn't even get him- he took that barb right in the heart. Freaky. I thought he was great- this really bums me out.

| Well, that it was some form of sea creature makes sense, actually. For one, sea life may be hard for him to read and gauge their mood. For two, he was out of his element underwater. He survived by his own quick reflexes to avoid getting hurt. Underwater, he was no where near as maneuverable so he would have been easy pickings if something decided to attack. Unfortunately, that's what happened. |

Just confirms what I've known for some time: the fastest way to a man's heart is through his ribcage.

Call it "conservation of luck," I guess. This is the most sad death I've heard of in a while. I don't know why; I didn't know him personally, and didn't even watch him on TV much, but he was so universally loved I can't help but miss him. It's like when Mr. Rogers died.

It's similar to Dale Earnhardt: Died young, but he died doing what he loved, and there's no better way out than that; especially as he did enough for several lifetimes.
RIP Steve Irwin. |

Does anyone have access to some more details? I've heard a rumor (unsourced) that the ray was buried in the sand -- which would make this a diving accident which has happened at least twice before.

'tis a shame. I never really watched much of the guys stuff but he always seemed such a likable bloke.
There has been a huge amount media coverage of his death here in Australia, though he didn't actually become famous here until after he had made a name for himself in the US. |

Tragic, particularly for his children who will never really know their dad.
However, it reminds me a bit of some birder friends of mine who were discussing a biologist they'd known. He'd been working in the Canadian arctic, and one day didn't come back to camp. His team found him, dead of a massive heart attack, which had apparently hit him as he was photographing the nest of a Ross's Gull.
The birders' comments were "what a great way to go".
(Note that this story makes more sense if you know how rare the Ross's Gull is in North America.) |

Well, when they do the biopic I know my obvious choice to play Steve:

Bugger!
The only thing I can say against him is that, at time, he over-anthropormorphized the animals he dealt with, but that might just have been a narrative pose he adopted in the service of educating the masses about the true nature of the various dangerous predators he worked with.
But, when you compare that against his obvious love of the subject, his committment to nature conservation & animal study, his infectious enthusiasm and boundless energy in the service of his goal of making people understand the importance of preserving natural habitat, any negatives boil away.
God keep the Irwin family (and this includes the staff of Australia Zoo, whom Steve obviously doted on as much as he did his own children).
