Great site: www.rifftrax.com.
Mike Nelson still lives.
She was bred in old Kentucky, but she's just a crumb up here. |

Yeah, I saw that site not too long ago. James Lileks mentioned it in his "Bleat". Looks interesting.

I'm glad he got Kevin Murphy to help with Trek V- I hope that's a trend. I have the new DVD of Plan 9 with Mike riffing by himself and the feel is all wrong. It's just a guy talking at the movie and it's annoying. You need that party dynamic to make it work. Ideally they still need a third guy.
Also, it would be cool if they'd do films while in the theaters. I'd actually pay money to see Wicker Man if I had a great riff trak. Imagine all the other PO-ed patrons wondering why the heck you like this crappy film so much!!

Trace is doing time over at America's Funniest Home Videos. It makes my kids roll on the floor with laughter so I've seen quite a few eps in the past year, and I think the writing can actually be pretty sharp every now and then.
Of course I've also recently started turning my oldest on to the joys of MTS3K.

In fact, i think Josh Wienstine ( Dr. Earhart ) writes there too! I liked Mike's commentary for Plan 9, but yeah, imagine the gang doing it. Riffing is a movie lovers party. They did Trek V...Oh, i gotta find a way to record THAT!

Josh Weinstein is indeed listed as having worked on AFHM.
Oddly enough, he and Trace did voices for a video game called Darkstar that's supposed to come out later this year.

Mike has riffed some movies with Kevin Murphy and some with Billy Corbett but I don't understand why the three of them can't get together.
Anyway, most of the movies they're riffing right now aren't really that bad. I wonder if that's because they keep hoping in the back of their minds that one day Best Brains will regroup with new MST3K shows. In which case, they'd want to save the worst movies for Best Brains. |

Update: Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett will be appearing together live at the SF Sketchfest on January 16th.

No idea what they'll be riffing or how long their skit is scheduled to be. |

I've listened to/watched several of the RiffTrax now, and for the most part they are very enjoyable. I do agree that the ones where he pairs up with Kevin Murphy or Bill Corbett are much better than the ones he does alone. There's just something about the group dynamic that makes it more enjoyable. And I think even they've realized this, since almost all the newer releases are team efforts.
And they certainly make some movies much more worthwhile. I would never have watched xXx if Mike hadn't riffed it. Surprisingly though, I discovered that it was much less bad than I imagined it would be. It was actually a fairly entertaining movie on it's own. But hearing Mike yell "Oh no, my collection of oily rags!" or such every time there was an explosion made it even better.
I'm going to have to check out the Matrix next.

While it's a good idea, I don't think it can be done for practical reasons. I imagine you need to have access to a decent video copy and at least a minimal sound recording setup to make one of these things. Since this is just a small shop, It would be very hard,or at least very expensive, for them to get these things done in time to distribute them to movie-going patrons. Besides, it's even more difficult to keep the audio in sync when you don't have control of the video.

I noticed that almost from the very beginning. I think they're deliberately trying to avoid recreating the exact MST3K formula, but not because they're hoping to restart it. I think they just wanted to expand their coverage a bit. They don't have to stick to really-bad movies, so why not expand their efforts to other, more mainstream fare that's just as deserving?

| Good point. Viewers would be more likely to download a rifftrax to Top Gun than, say, Lifeforce. And more downloads means more $$. |

| Yeah, you can e-mail them for requests. Myself, I begged them to do The Village. |
