I caught part of an old Dick Cavett show on TCM tonight, where Dick interviewed Bette Davis. I plan to watch the whole thing on tape in the next day or two.
But what I saw clued me in on something: Bette Davis had brains, and she had a (figurative) set of brass balls. Combine the two, and that's high praise. While much of what they discussed had to do with the old Hollywood studio system, I found it telling — and sad — that much of it applies today, if only some of the actors working now would take heed.
Unfortunately, it's not the case. Too many of them have settled on having balls and no brains. Cavett wondered if the quality of current films could be better if only actors would refuse to take part in crappy movies. (My personal answer: hell, yes.) Some things never change. |

Actors have to eat and pay rent. Many of them literally can't afford to refuse to take pary in ****py movies. |

If you're a starving actor, that's correct. But it doesn't apply to most of the A-listers. Robert De Niro comes to mind here. |

I'll miss guys like Donald Pleasance and Micheal Caine who really have an ethic of "turn down no role, ever." Man Who Would Be King one week, Jaws IV the next. Put gas in that Bentley!! *g*

The hot actors with influence use it to make movies like Battlefield Earth. Besides, with a 10% employment rate, actors have very little leverage.

Nah. It's not so much actors turning down bad roles that make for better movies, its the writers actually writing good scripts that make for better movies. The sad, sad truth is that the movies that do get made every year, those poorly written, cliche-driven pieces of dreck are the very cream of the crop as far as writing in Hollywood these days. Granted, poor acting or directing can sink even an excellent script, but without a good script, there is no framework to hold everything together. A good actor without a good script is just... Ernie Hudson.
Jaws: the Revenge could have been much, much better but for want of a decent script. In fact, JtR may be worthy of study because it is so bad. (I own only two of the Jaws movies on DVD. The original and this one) it should have been at least on part with Jaws 2, which I personally find very cliched but the reason why cliches are overused is because they work. |
