For reasons, not entirely clear(or rationial) to myself, I decided to look at the fall out of Gigli.

It's been three years and I wanted to amuse myself so I was re-reading reviews and I came across the story of Amy Dawes.

Apparently, Amy was the only reviewer to give Gigli a good mention. But when the movie was foisted on the movie going public, reaction to her favorable review backlashed. So much so that she was FIRED for it. So I looked on the net for what happened to her. I found this quote:

Indeed, one of the few critics who dared to say anything nice about Gigli was a woman, Variety's Amy Dawes, who says her write-up prompted readers to flood her in-box with hate mail and her boss, Peter Bart, to relieve her of her reviewing duties. "I felt like the Dixie Chicks!" Dawes says. "It's not like the war in Iraq, it's a movie—but there was the same intolerance of a differing opinion."

Intolerance of a differing opinion?

My god, lady! You told people:

"Its often profane flights of lyrical rhetoric are often hilarious, on a par with the character-based wackiness of "Bull Durham,"

"Lopez and Affleck are thoroughly engaging in their smartly calibrated opposites -- his lost boy under a tough, Vinnie-from-the-block exterior to her sensually purring Zen warrior. Lopez has not been this good since "Out of Sight," while Affleck's turn should add a measure of respect to what seems like an inordinately charmed career."

""Gigli" arrives carrying more baggage than a Greyhound bus, which may distract moviegoers from what is a silly but still an enjoyably written and performed romantic comedy."

As a critic, you should have warned people to stay away from Gigli. Even Roger Ebert(for whom J LO can do no wrong) had to conceed that this was a bad film. But you encouraged people to see it. And now your griping because people got mad at you?

Inflated ego thy name is Amy Dawes.

Well, as much as I support freedom of expression, isn't this like crying "Fire!" in a crowded theatre?

Actually, that would have been a kindness if it was during a showing of "Gigli".

If I gave high praise to Battlefield Earth in a review, I'd get canned in a heartbeat, and I'd deserve it.

Now, Now, idiots have free speech rights too. And we have the right to call them idiots...or senator ...or Congressman....sorry, getting redundant.

I haven't seen the film, but I don't have a problem with people getting canned after they prove their job-related opinions just can't be taken seriously.

It's not just about differing opinions as it's about how solid the negative opinion was of that movie, that a differing opinion is immediately suspect the way a NAMBLA member's description of love is suspect. But, like the Dixie Chicks, there may have been factors beyond the simple merits of the movie involved.

Natalie Maines's comments were made at a time when national solidarity seemed more important than things like, well, the truth, I guess. You know. Bush was doing some things that lots of people didn't like but it was more important to support Our President than to actually be honest about what you thought about the war in Iraq and stuff.

So it is with Gigli. The whole "Bennifer" thing was clogging up entertainment news like a greasy hair clog backing up the sink. They were America's Sweethearts and we loved them. But we were losing the first blush of that love and were hungry for new tantalization. In other words, we were sick of them and wanted them the hell out of our face. The movie provided an outlet for that backlash. By all accounts it is terrible. But every terrible movie has people who like them anyway. I am still flabberghastted by people who say they love Fargo. The beautiful thing is that Ben and Jennifer met on the set of Gigli. It is only fitting that it's release should mark their demise. Closure. Ain't that grand?

Me, I've never been a big fan of either of them, although I do wish I had a full-length picture of J. Lo in The Dress.

In any case, Bennifer was doomed from the start. The publicity took five seconds to get out of control. Someone should teach Hollywood couples that a little gossip goes a long way, and a lot can clog the arteries faster than a pastrami-and-cheese sandwich.

The first I ever heard of this "Bennifer" thing was the announcement that it was over. Hmm. I guess there are some advantages to prolonged isolation from one's own culture sometimes.

If you've managed to avoid the word "Bradjelina" then you are truely one of the lucky ones.

I think all these press people that use "Brangelina", "Bennifer", and now "TomKat" need to be slapped repeatedly with a wet, rolled up National Enquirer. Maybe we can get the U.N. on this, as they don't seem to have anything else to do.

So if the war in Iraq had gone well, so would Gigli?
