Panties and cleavage and fan-service in general are the things I will never understand about Japanese animation. It's often stuck into the most inappropriate shows.
Granted, that's animation and not live-action. It's nice to know it's all of a piece, I guess. (Pun not intended.) |

I find it hard to compare live action television with anime. There are some common themes, but there are things about some genres of anime that are just out there, even by Japanese standards. I guess it's because a lot of anime, especially the kind westerners are most familiar with, is really kind of a fringe thing here as well, mostly being produced and watched by and for otaku types. A large fringe, admittedly, but still a fringe.
BTW, had to sit through another mystery/drama tonight. The story and characters were so utterly generic that I can't even begin to describe it, but the acting screamed "melodrama" from every pore. Yawn.

Hold on what's this? We have two schoolgirls wrestling in a wheelchair while a shambling elephant-man type figure approaches from behind. And now we have a magical transformation scene with a katana, a red chinese dress, and a glowing pentagram. Looks like some kind of cheap "supernatural" cheezefest. Now this is the kind of Japanese stuff that's fun to watch. :-) |
