Finally... Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy reunited!!!!

Now a question: I'm still making my way through the available MST3K DVDs and haven't had a chance to download Rifftrax yet. I'm wondering: when Kevin and Bill riff along with Mike, do they effect their Tom and Crow personas or do they use their "real" voices.
(They've played so many different characters on the show I'm not even sure what they really sound like.)
UPDATE: One of our alert Jabootubes informs us that the Rifftrax for Battlefield Earth is also available, featuring Mike, Kevin, and Bill.

O, i gotta check this out! I'd guess they's use their own voices most of the time, but might revert for some "old times sake" moments.

No personas here. Everyone just appears as themselves. But Kevin Murphy still sounds like just like Tom Servo. And Bill Corbett's real voice sounds to me a lot like Tom also, but bit lighter. The only "character" is Disembodio, a synthesized computer voice that chimes in from time to time to keep the track in sync, but he also occasionally jumps in to help with the riffing.
Good choice for a reunion movie. Quite deserving. I can't wait to check this one out. |

Actually, that's what I was hoping. I love Tom Servo's voice... it's pitch perfect for riffing and perfectly compliments either Mike or Joel. As for Crow, I was always more partial to Trace than Billy anyway, so no big... no offense to Billy, because he does a great job, too. Funny to hear that in real life he sounds more like Tom!
Off topic (slightly) but does anybody here remember the Joel Weinstein years at MST3K? How did his voice compare with Kevin Murphy's? |

Weinstein's Tom was a slightly lighter and more nasal, but not too un-Tom-like. And his mad scientist voice was even higher. I wonder which was closer to his regular voice. I've read that there was a bit of complaining from fans when Kevin took over the voice at the beginning of the second season, but of course now most people naturally think of him as Tom.
I do agree that Trace did a better crow though. Trace's voice was just perfect for the wisecracking type Crow is. Interestingly, I just went back and checked out some of the episodes I have, and noticed something about Bill Corbett's Crow. During the intro segments, he does a pretty good job of imitating the slightly whiny sound Trace gave to Crow, but during the movie the vibrato drops off and he falls back more into his real voice. So if you want to get an idea of what Bill sounds like on Rifftrax, listen to him when he's actually riffing movies on MST3K and you'll get an idea. |

I went ahead and downloaded the new Battlefield Earth Rifftrax featuring all three of them. It's actually not the funniest track they've ever done (I've only had time to listen to half) but it's good, and it sure is good having all three of them again. The tracks work much better than with Mike solo. I hope they keep doing ti in the future.
