Most people who enjoy movies these days are aware of storyboards, a series of still drawings that help the filmmakers plot out a movie shot by shot. Others are also aware of animatics, a simplified animation that gives a better feel for the movement and timing.
Watching the featurette "Flying Saucers Over Hollywood" on my Plan 9 From Outer Space DVD, someone made an interesting comment. He said that the special effects were not the special effects Ed Wood had meant to have. They are merely placeholders for the real effects if he could have afforded them. By that logic, we could say that the acting, set, dialog, etc were likewise placeholders for the quality work he wanted to have if he could have afforded it or had the time to acquire it.
If everything seen on the screen is just a stand-in for the real elements that would have been filmed, then one could see the entire movie as an animatic. This is an interesting perspective. |

But it still would not have been a good movie.

It's a lot of fun, though. |

I recall test screenings of Star Trek II using animatics when the special effects weren't ready. The audiences adapted quickly and allowed for the rough storyboards.
This won't come as news to anyone here (it may to some players in Hollywood), but what the hey: a really good story will trump special effects any day. |

Brad, that may also come as a surprise to Broadway producers, who often feel that large numbers of people cavorting on stage, along with huge sets and effects that make people say "I didn't know you could do that live", can replace actual stories, characters, acting, songs, etc.
Strange that a well-written script should, theoretically, cost no more than a bad one (same amount of paper, ink, etc. - even the cost of a good writer doesn't appear to be prohibitively higher than a bad one), but it is so often jettisoned in favour of the really expensive stuff. |
