| I never saw this one - but the review doesn't make it sound Jabootu fodder. So, mpollack, it is up to YOU to write a new review, and prove them wrong ;-). |

It was "based" on various Nintindo games when Nintindo was starting to slip in the market. How bad do YOU think it is?

That show was pretty terrible, all right. Especially if you were a video game nut, who was constantly forced to point out what was wrong with the characterizations in the show. *cough*
Mega Man was green, useless, and had a oddly low voice...Simon Belmont was a pansy-ass primadonna more concerned with his looks than slaying the undead...Kid Icarus' bow was somehow more useful than Mega Man's gun, and he constantly stuck "-us" or "-icus" on the end of every third word to assure us he was Greek ("That stinksicus to the maximus! I needicus a drinkicus to dealicus with thisus!")...the Princess was merely there to be rescued each week...and Captain N was drier and more boring than a stale Triscuit (tm). This was one of those cartoons where I constantly rooted for the villians. Although I didn't like them much either, other than Mother Brain, who was the sole saving grace of the show.
I think to watch this again would be utter madness.

Too bad "-us" and "-icus" are Roman suffixes. So add inaccurate culture references to its list of failures.

I don't know if it was that much worse than the other "ad campaign" animation at the time, especially if compared to the various Mario cartoons.
It does, however, have the veneer of a gamer's wet dream. The idea that all those hours of Donkey Kong really did have a purpose. The nearly unlimitless powers, including the ability to freeze time. The fact that our hero knows far more about this universe than any character living in it.
And, of course, the need to neuter any possible competition that Cap-N might have romantically, most notably Simon Belmont. Zelda underwent a similar neutering whenever he guest starred. Mega-Man and Kid Icarus are nuetered in a different way - by making them harmless pets.
In fact, this may be the only professionally made Mary Sue series.

Oh, I'd be willing to bet it isn't.

Is it professionally made? You sure they didn't just...I don't know... make it up as they went along?

Depends on what you define "professionally made". For all its faults, the artwork was pretty damn good for the time. I remember it being one of the better-looking cartoons, and the voicework, though often annoying, was at least strong and varied. No "that guy's doing all the voices!" or anything like that. And they did try to incorporate as many games as they could into the series, either with characters from them (King Hippo from Mike Tyson's Punch-out, Mega-Man), or plots that took them into various game worlds (they went to a bayou world once and teamed up with Bayou Billy, they went to Castlevania a few times). I think they were really trying to make something out of the premise. It was just weakly written (most episodes involved saving the Princess from some baddie or another), and not at all true to the characters gamer kids had come to know and love, which were pretty big obstacles to overcome. Plus, it was blatantly a commercial, but so many cartoons of the 80s were that I can't fault it for that. At least it was plugging a damn fine product.
-------------- I can't believe I remember all this $&!+. |

I can't believe I skipped this thread....this cartoon had some fond memories for me. No it wasn't a great cartoon, and towards the end the series was horrendous.
I liked the idea though; a setting where the various characters of Nintendo interacted in various ways. It didn't always work out, but it was at least different.
The funny thing is, as an animated commercial, Nintendo didn't do much with it, which considering how much control Nintendo had over their product back then, was odd. By all rights there should have been tie ins to Nintendo Power. When they kicked off their seperate Zelda and Mario Cartoons, there should have been links between those. And if they yanked a setting from a game (like Castlevania) it would have been a good gimmick to have a portion of the cartoon having the characters find a secret area or somesuch.
Either way, I'll be buying this on release date. Now, to wait for Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and the hopeful release of the Transformers animated series (to tie into the movie)

Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors....coincidentally enough, I just picked up a video cassette with the first three episodes a couple of weeks ago for $3 at a local grocery store. I don't know where they got it, it was in superb condition though. I've only watched the first episode (there's a LOT of stuff to watch in my house...) but it held up all right to my memories. I feel like I should dig up my old Drill Sergeant, Gun Grinner and Beast Walker to watch with me.
