On the way home from work this evening, I stopped at the dry cleaners to pick up my suits. My card wouldn't work for either ATM or credit. The card was fine, just not the account. So I went to the nearest bank outlet to ask what the deal was. After a phone call, the rep gave me a number and told me to call it immediately as there was some kind of problem, probably a snafu related to my making an international purchase days previous. I had heard about fine-print clauses of the Patriot Act occasionally doing that, so I wasn't too worried.
I got home and called the number. The lady on the other end explained that the international purchase was no problem; but on 02-05-07, someone had tried to Western Union $942 from my account, at which time the bank immediately froze my account in order to get my confirmation, and neither that nor any other transactions would be made from my account until the bank had spoken with me about it. Of course, I told 'em that it wasn't me. The lady said very well, my account number was hereby voided, and I'd have a new card with new number in five days.
A mild inconvenience for me, but worth it for the bank to foil the would-be thief.
I'm not saying the name of the bank because that would make this thread seem like an advertisement. I just feel real miffed that someone tried to do that to me, steal the money that I had earned; real baffled that anyone was able to come as close to stealing my money as they did; and real real grateful to my bank for staying sharp.
Thank you, bank. Good catch! |

For all we can complain about them, banks are almost as quick as the crooks.
One night, I got a call from "supposedly my bank", asking to confirm if I had received my new credit card, which was due (old one was expiring). I said no. Turns out, it was scammers who'd stolen the card, looking for a way to authorize it (presumably by calling everyone named "twitterpate" to find someone waiting for a card).
The next day, at 10 am, I had a call from my bank asking if I'd just spent $500 at a Walmart some distance from my home town. On hearing I hadn't (I couldn't figure out HOW to spend $500 at one go in Walmart), they cancelled the card and sent me out a new one. Express this time.
Darn fine work by the bank dicks, if I say so. |
