Would Rocky qualify for the Hero's Death Battle Exemption in Rocky IV?

I guess so, since Drago didn't have much trouble to defeat Apollo Creed.

Although, to be fair, I think Apollo got caught off guard. Plus, he didn't train like Rocky.

I'm not that sure that some wood chopping and rock lifting would have saved Apollo.

Hero's Death Exemption for Rocky, all the way. That one-ton-plus-per-square-inch punch of Drago's shoulda made Rocky look like something taken out of Apocalypto because it was too gory. Taking one after the other like he did in the fight, he should've had traumatic brain damage like Apollo did after three rounds.

Ah, C'mon.

Call me naive. But WATCHING the training scenes in that movie caused me to lose 5 pounds and gain some muscle.

Clip 1

Clip 2

And the main fight wasn't so bad. To see Drago go from confident, to respectiful, to realizing that Rocky will not make it easy for him was very satisfying. I also liked it when the commissar tried to order Drago around like a peasant only to be smacked down because Drago didn't want him ruining his moment. It was probably also Dolph's finest moment.

And just for us. Let us appriciate Rocky's more Jabootu-esce moments.

I wonder what Stallone had against computers at the time. In both this one and "First Blood - Part II" they have negative connotations. I even remember that the VHS covers in Spain describe Drago as a "Soviet computer", which makes the whole thing even more hilarious. Was Drago a bot?

About Drago, I found quite annoying that once Rocky defeats him Stallone doesn't even havehim on camera again. That Character was probably the best "villain" in the series, but we barely get to know him, much less to see how the defeat affects him.

To hell with the computers, what did they have against light bulbs? Drago's training center was constantly in the dark.

If that film were made today. The computers would belong to a Evil corporation(were talking Richard Burton Eeeevil here).

But I think the point here is that the Soviets had a elitist class where everything was handed to them. But Rocky is a character that got to where he was from hard work and raw determination. And I think that is what he was going for here.

Nemo, I think you're giving the movie too much credit, but you've hit on something. One thing they could've done to make thing a lot more interesting would be to make DRAGO a lot more interesting. I imagined what might happen if Drago, in private, was horrified by what he'd done to Apollo, but was forced to fight Rocky or see his family punished (which the good ol' Soviet U would be more than happy to do). When he finally attacks his trainer, saying he's fighting for himself from here on, then looks Rocky in the eye and says, in a respectful way, "To the end," the movie came to life for me.

Too bad it happened in the last four minutes.

Last week, on the Daily Show, they were doing a bit on the suspicious deaths of journalists who criticized Putin, with John Oliver going "Really? I haven't read anything about that in the Russian newspapers..." then reading off a list of headlines like "Putin has strength of ten men." One of the others was "Ivan Drago defeats Rocky in rematch."

You're right on that score. Communism is a philosiphy based on coersion. And forcing a guy to fight would have worked.

But one of the themes of Rocky IV is to never think your opponent will lie down for you. Apollo made this mistake and got killed for it. And that was why Drago lost, he had the confidence, he had the "genetics", and he had tools to make him a great fighter. But he had way too many people whispering in his ear that Rockey was soft. He was also fed too many soft workout partners during his training. In fact, the Soviets believed Rocky would be finished in the first couple of rounds. But Rocky is a fighter of substance. He knows victory, he knows defeat, and he knows endurance. And Rocky knew on some level that Drago was overly confident. So what he did was slowly chop on him while at the same time show Drago he could take whatever Drago could dish out. That's why at times you see Rocky goad Drago by saying "Come on! Fight!" Drago, for his part, does his best to meet Rocky's challenge. But it's slowly wearing him out. And that's why Drago got angry when he got slapped upside his head. He took that as an acquesation that he wasn't trying hard enough. In the end, Drago couldn't meet the challege Rocky presented and he lost.

Alow me to rant out a quick review.
It might have been better for the Rocky series to just be a PAIR of movies. Apollo the champ who gets beaten by chalenger Rocky because Apollo is over-confident (As we saw in ROCKY) but trains hard in the sequal and beats Rocky in the re-match (Which is what should have happened). The fight ends with Rocky saying "You were ALWAYS the champ!" and Apollo responding with "But you made me EARN the title!" They gain great respect for each other and they become friends, maybe Rocky opens a training camp that's sponcered by Apollo.

But as to #4....
The subtitle was "The War" and Stallone makes a speach about how it's better that two men beat the crud out of each other than a few MILLION fight it out. What was THAT about? Was there a sub-plot about a Soviet/American war that got left in the cutting room?

An interesting casus belli. There was a war between English and Spain that allegedly started because a merchant had his ear cut off. Certainly killing a beloved boxer would be totally acceptable as well...

P.S. It is interesting that "Rambo III" is dedicated to the Mujaheddin - the Taliban among them. The wheel turns... D.S.
